Off season plan step by step

Created by: Mattkenn
Team: 2021-22 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: May 13, 2021
Published: May 13, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Use your 1st rounder to acquire RH top pairing D-men: I'm looking at Seth jones or Parayko

2. Expansion draft: Get Seattle to bite on white. His contract might be a burden in 2-5 years when we must sign Stutzle, Pinto, Sanderson, Branntrom, Formenton, JBD etc

In this scenario:

Protected:
Tkachuk
Batherson
Brown
Paul
Chabot
Parayko
Zub
Mete

Unprotected:
-White
-Dadonov
-Tierney

I expect Seattle to defintely take white over dadonov and tierney. But they might take Mete, L.Brown, Abramov or Daccord over White if they are available

3. UFA: I think the Sens have a 2x5 Million budget for a Free Agent. I would try to nab a centermen that can play middle 6. I think Krejci or Granlund can fit the bill. In this scenario I am taking granlund. In two years granlund and Dadonov (10M) are off the books to sign Pinto and Stutzle.

4. RFA:
Sign Tkachuk to an 8 year. He has been billed as the face of the rebuild. Time to show commitment to your fans and change the lingering narrative about letting your star players walk in their prime. Like it or not, he will command 8M ++. I don't have an ounce of doubt in my mind that he is worth it.

Bridge Batherson. 3 x 4 seems reasonable. In 3 years time, Murray 6.25 is off the books, drizzy can get a peice of that as a raise.

Zub: I think it is worth to sign him to a longer term contract. I'd try to offer him 2.5 x 4. But I think he will want more, and has a good case. 5 x 3 seems like a good signing for both sides.

Mete: Has defintely impressed and has earned a contract extension but Ottawa will not want to buy any UFA years. 3 x 1.2 might be a reasonable expectation for the contract.

5. Extension:

Parayko: 8 x 6.25 = 50M. Comparable is Ryan Ellis.

Paul: 5x3m. His comparable is Scott Laughton.

I don't see a world where Parayko becomes available before the trade deadline next year. Blues are a contender, and he's their best dman.

As for Jones? Theoretically, if the Jackets can't extend him this summer, he could definitely be available, but if he's not extending there, he's probably going to test free agency. That's a lot to give up for 1 year of him.

If Ottawa wins a lottery pick then maybe. He would fit awfully well next to sanderson in a few years, but Clarke will go top 5 for sure so Ottawa might just miss out on him.

In any case, I think Ottawa should target a strong, defensive minded wall to pair with Chabot. That's what i think the team really lacks. They have enough offensive D-men.

Let's say they get their ass kicked firt round, it might make sense to look at trading one of of their top 4D, otherwise they will lose Dunn in expansion for nothing. With many UFA's, they are looking at a mini rebuild of their forwards around Kyrou and Thomas, anyway. Getting a top 8 pick, an early second, 3 B+ prospect, and a servicable RD as a stop gap for losing Parayko is a decent return for now and the future.

I agree it's no sure thing. But they may consider it. I think they strongly consider if Ott wins the lottery.

I mean, even with that, that's a whole lot to pay for 1 season of Parayko. Re: Dunn-They can always trade him for a reduced return. Or, alternatively, expose Faulk. Faulk has been better this year, but shedding $6.5 mil from the cap isn't a horrible move.

Should have taken Drysdale.

Parayko too old for OTT, he is 28, OTT should not sign anyone over 25 to long term contracts or trade for anyone over 25

First of all, that "return for the future" is weak when the best asset in the offer is this year's 1st. The Blues are not in rebuild mode. No clue how anyone could get that idea. Secondly, this notion that we'd trade our top D-man to avoid losing our 4th D-man is kooky stuff. The Blues are not doing that, obviously.
