They sure can afford it. It adds less than 4 million to their cap and they will lose salary in the expansion draft. Then 13 million comes off the cap in Fleury and Reilly Smith after 1 year

Even as 1C he is not worth that contract. When they do eventually get better they will need that cap space to supplement their roster and cannot afford to be overpaying guys by a couple million AAV. Especially when they are already carrying Skinners anchor contract
