Please Canucks do Something

Description
The Canucks have 3 problems: they need a top 6 winger, 3rd center, and top 4 defenseman.

Sabres get a good prospect in Lind, + a 2nd this year and next year's 1st (might be willing to trade this year's 1st, depending on whether it looks like Canucks can acquire a good D prospect). Lind can be subbed for pretty much any of their stronger young prospects whose names aren't Jack Rathbone.

This doesn't solve all of the problems but a trade for Reinhart gives a solid. flexible top 9. Reinhart can either be played as a 2C, or a 1st line winger with Miller at 3C.

With Holtby going to the Kraken (probably include "future considerations" in that pick trade), that leaves ~25m to sign Pettersson, Hughes, Reinhart, and lock down Graovac as a 4C. I have Pettersson and Hughes signing identical bridges at 7.5 (the top end of what I'd expect), and Reinhart at 7 (this would depend on term though), leaving about 3m in cap to find another servicable defenseman.

Working this whole thing on the assumptions that:
>Canucks can't offload Loui, and buy him out
>Virtanen is bought out
>One of Beagle/Roussel stays on LTIR, the other is buried, and both are rostered (i.e. not traded away)

Canucks cap outlook is less bleak in 2022-23, so things might be nicer then. I expect this roster would be a playoff team if the Pacific Division returns. The top 9 is strong and even the 4th line has offensive power with Highmore and Gadj (who has been tearing it up in the AHL).
Defense is obviously problematic but finding a decent stay-at-home D partner for Hughes would allow Schmidt to play LH and bump Juolevi down (possibly use him as a trade piece for a D). Also possible Edler stays on a cheap retirement contract to live out his twilight as a Canuck.

As I said, the top 9 is flexible - Miller can play 3C, Horvat 2C, and Reinhart slots in on the wing (with Hoglander on line 1). Both work, I like the Horvat 3rd line with all 3 players being fairly defensive forwards, but I understand not wanting to play him at "3C".

It’s more for Bo himself, he’s the captain he’ll play on the top6 and top6 minutes

In this scenario you’re expecting to get a first line caliber player for a third liner, a second round pick, and a middle first next year. Reinhart would be probably the third best player on your team behind Pettersson and Boeser. And it’s easily argued that Reinhart is a more versatile player than Boeser.

Nobody seems to consider what the Sabres would actually want in return for the players that they think they can get. Buffalo already has several capable bottom six players. They have a couple capable centers behind Eichel, and 2 top six caliber left wingers. A bunch of bottom six players doesn’t help them do anything, they need top six talent especially if they’re giving up one of the top six players they already have. Not to mention in order to make the salary cap work whoever is acquiring either Eichel or Reinhart needs to move money, and no, Buffalo is not taking your worthless cap dump players (Eriksson, Baerschi) to make it work for you.

Completely understand where you're coming from; I agree that the people assuming you'll take players like Beagle/Roussel/Baertschi/Eriksson are insane, which is why I didn't bundle those in here. I know taxi squads won't exist next year but you can easily sub that for being buried in the AHL.

I think it's worth considering that Buffalo have very little leverage with Reinhart - yes he's RFA but he has explicitly said he doesn't want to stick around for a rebuild, and would like to play on the west coast.
Lind is a talented 22 y.o. right-winger who has top 6 potential. He doesn't fit the Canucks timeline because the Canucks don't want to rebuild, but obviously as with any young prospect it's a gamble for the Sabres.
As I said, you could sub the 2022 1st for this years, if the Canucks believe they can find a right-handed defenseman on the market and prospects like Clarke are gone before they would be likely to select.

You're pretty much right on. Reinhart likely goes for rental trade deadline prices no matter where he's traded to. Make the 2022 1st the 2021 1st (like you noted above) and I think you have a deal.

Moving Eichel and Reinhart, I bet the Sabres do take a cap dump (assuming it's only 2-3 years) to get an extra asset in a deal. They'll want to make the deals look as big as possible.
