A rebuild but is it really worse than last years team

Created by: Jrader17
Team: 2021-22 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: May 20, 2021
Published: May 24, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Toc ends up as the Rangers coach it wouldn't be a stretch to see Phil want to follow him. Retention makes Phil at $4M for the year which is great value for a guy who just scored at a 30 goal/60 point pace while being centered by Johan Larsson for most of the year. In return Coyotes get two decent young NHL ready player who aren't stars but might do with getting more playing time/ change of scenery.

Edm gets a top 10 goalie, Coyotes get an interesting prospect in McLeod who had a nice AHL season and is on the cusp of being NHL ready. Savoie is another good prospect, but neither are blue chip or in Edm's top 5 prospects.

Coyotes use their cap space to take on Johnson's contract. In return they get Cal Foote a young RHD to put with Chychrun hopefully long term. Also get two nice prospects from Tampa in Alnefelt and Finley. Tampa obviously gets desperately needed cap space and protection slots.

    Kessel is worth more

I'll be floored if Adin Hill isn't selected in the expansion draft

Over the last 2 seasons according to SPAR, Kessel has been worth -5.5 mil and -2.4 mil.

Even with a full 50% retention, Arizona would have to add for the Rangers to take him, similarly to how we had to pay to move Marc Staal.

Yeah it's not bad as a quick and dirty value metric (is this player a below or above replacement level guy / what tier do they fall into). I prefer xSPAR for Dmen. And because it's hard to really fully eliminate teammate impact, I cross-reference Hockeyviz' player isolates to see if someone is really driving play or being carried.

Across the board there, Kessel grades out as a liability. Great finishing ability, but that's about all he's bringing these days.

If you trade Keumper as I did here, Hill gets protected.
