Description
This roster targets flexibility upfront next year while finding a long term partner for Hughes this year. I prioritized picks this year. You take the short term bet on Jake Mccabe through his prime. Cal Foote you just say you can get all the money next year if you play well enough. You give Getzlaf a spezza/ thornton esque deal ( I know unlikely a man can hope). Getzlaf and Pod eat bottom six matchups for breakfast. Appleton could be another expansion exploitable forward but this fits cap well. As much as he may be slow, we know Edler is gonna come back on the cheap. Cal Foote for Rathbone makes alot of sense both ways. Rathbone is ineligible for expansion and is hughes 2.0, foote is big and plays rightside with Hughes. Tampa then flip Rathbone for something useful towards cup. You could go after Cernak or Jake Bean instead but this seems more reasonable. Jordie Benn wants to be in Vancouver could be moved once again at deadline. I left room for you to insert your value depth winger of choice on a minimum contract. You could also put beagle in minors for another cheap bottom six center but more likely he stays to kill penalties. Pacific is weakest division in hockey this roster probably makes the playoffs.

I would keep Rathbone over Foote .

I think a long term partner for Hughes will eventually be Jett Woo. Kid stays home , hits , can move the puck but it is going to take some time. Not as long as most figure but there will be mistakes along the way.

If Appleton isn't taken by Seattle, the Jets have no reason to trade him for much lesser spare parts.

Foote trade could make sense in a year or two but right now both prospects are too raw and Rathbone is a better skater with more offensive potential so at the moment I wouldn't move him for a dman thats skating ability to play big minutes is still in question.

Interesting idea though.

TB passes They need the Rd more LD is freaking stacked so even if Rathbone has more potential (very debatable) the position is wrong for them.
