21-22 Driedger-Saad-Bozak-Barrie

Created by: Krahntinuum
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2021
Published: May 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
G - Driedger; LW - Saad; 3C - Bozak; 1RD - Barrie. Requires trading Koskinen - likely have to use a prospect like Bear to move that contract without retaining salary. Sign & protect Nuge and Barrie before exp draft. Protected List: McDavid, Draisaitl, Nuge, Puljujarvi, Yamo, Archibald, Kassian, Nurse, Klefbom, Barrie, Smith. Sign pending RFA's Yamo, Khaira, Benson, Shore. Sign pending UFA's Larsson, Smith, after exp draft before free agency. Sign UFAs Saad, Bozak, Driedger in free agency. Hide Turris in AHL to save $1.125M cap. Could easily replace G Driedger with Mrazek for about the same money.

Koskinen is an upgrade to Ducks current backups. Bear is a top 4 RD on a good salary. More than pays for the Koski salary.
This deal might also be executed with Seattle. Kraken take Koskinen for Oilers to expose Bear to draft. Bear played junior in Seattle.

I’d rather have Varlamov than Smith. If NYI are trading him, why not to the Oilers.

You are losing a fantastic asset for nothing, you can afford to buy out Koskinen

I agree, I posted another possibility with that trade... but Varlamov is $5M which means you probably can't afford both Saad and Nuge. Or you could let Barrie leave. Just leaves holes elsewhere.

You're gaining $4.5M in cap space for next year, which allows you to pay Brandon Saad to play with McDavid. I like Bear, but he's a second pairing D at best. Larsson is a better 2RD and Bouchard will be better than Bear at everything in a year or so.

1.5 for Koskinen and have to pay to replace Ethan Bear's minimal contract. Bad asset management.

1.5 x 2 for Koski, so 3M, which will restrict your ability to pay Nurse 7-8M the following year. I'm replacing Bear's 2M with Bouchard at $860K. Oh, and you have the highest scoring D in the NHL. Better asset management.

What. Oilers have 25 million in cap space this year. Next year we have 35 million. Turris/Pouliot comes off the book and we can give that money right to Nurse. Replacing Bear with Bouchard and one of them gets injured, then what? Screwed.

Pouliot comes off this year... that money will be spent. Only gain $525 with Turris. And you're not screwed if a RD goes down because Russell can play right side.. so can Koekkoek if they sign him. Lots of left D can play right side because there's way more of them. Don't forget you'll also have to give Puljujarvi a raise.

I’m not a fan of getting Saad so the money is not a problem.
