What I would try to do

Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Don't panic, yes we lost the series, yes Crosby Geno and Letang are a year older, but we also just won the division and mostly outplayed them, to an extent that if Sorokin was close to average we would have likely won the series regardless of Jarry.
1.5 Fire the goalie coach and bring in someone
2. Goaltending is inherently random, every goalie other than the elite of the elite (Helle, Vasy) are wildly inconsistent on a game to game and year to year basis, running with Jarry would not be the worst thing, and would likely be better than most goalies available in FA
3. That being said, if you can get a Ranta or Ullmark in FA, do it, otherwise, if the best option available is Mrazek/Reimer/Dreidger, I'm not sure I realy trust them any more than Jarry, I would still sign one of those 3, but keep Jarry in that scenario and have them push each other as a tandem, try to pull a ARZ and keep DeSmith maybe (also assuming that there is no way COL lets Grubi walk or BOS lets Tukka walk)
4. Expansion, the D is easy, Letang, Dumo, and MP, YES YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO PROTECT MP, HE IS GOOD AT HOCKEY, forwards you definitely protect Sid, Geno, Jake, Rust, and definitely let Carter (I highly doubt SEA selects a 36 yr old) and all the guys you would expect (Lafferty, Angello, AHLers, etc), then protect 3 of Zucker Kapanen Tanev ZAR and Blueger, in this scenario I'll go with Blueger ZAR and Kap, they're the three cheapest, if you're going to lose a good player, at least make sure it's a good player that makes a lot of money, goalies I could see protecting either, but they likely still protect Jarry, unless they make a move for a G before the ED
5. Matheson, idk who would take his contract, but he's gotta go, he makes way too much and is simply not very effective
6. Bring everyone back, there shouldn't be anyone who demands too much, and they were all quite effective
7. Sign a few depth forwards, could just bring back Sceviour and Janko, but meh
8. Go after some good 3rd liners, I like Freddy Carter and ERod, but would love to get guys a bit better than Freddy/ERod, and Carter is going to be 37...
9. Trade for a goalie if everything else is done, I personally really like what CAR has done, build as good a team in front of the G, and pickup random goalies and one eventually works

I could see them picking Tanev as well, I'd hate to see him go, but he does help with cap

  1. Matheson, Michael
Additional Details:
Poulin? Legare? I'd give both in a heartbeat before a 22 first, and you're delusional if you don't think this contract is significantly worse than JJ's was (could be any team, I doubt SEA would be all that interested in taking and extra cap dump immediately)

While I dont completely disagree, if Im Seattle I definitely pick Carter over Zucker and then trade him.

He cost very little, still has good two way game, was PITTS best player the last 3 weeks, and with a single year left at 2.6mil, he'd be worth a fair amount in trade, a low 1st/high 2nd? Carter is only 1 year, and when he expires the cap isn;t flat, so its a sound investment in a flat cap (better than a lot more expensive UFA) for any club looking to get stronger down the middle.

I disagree about Carter, while he was very good with us, I doubt SEA, or any team is going to take a 37 year old and not expect him to regress, I wouldn't hate that tho, if they do take him

I disagree with the Matheson take. Started out poorly but really came in to his own with the squad and with Dumo out and Letang struggling he definitely helped keep us afloat. Did he have a poor series against the Islanders, absolutely, he wasn't the only one. Him and Cici were a nice pairing and I could see them both coming back though Cici might draw more interest and could get more on the market. Talking salary cap wise I wouldn't mind if Seattle took either Zucker or Matheson.

Who I would protect:

Forwards: Crosby, Malkin, Jake, Rust, tanev, McCann, Kap
Defense: Letand (NCM), Dumo, either Petterson or Marino
Goalie: Jarry

He wasn't bad, but still certainly not worth almost 5 mil imo, especially at that term, and Marino doesn't need protected to I would def protect MP

instead of tanev they would likely protect carter. and then i think zuck could help seattle out more than tanev he just had a rough stint in pittsburgh
