Realistic Ideal Offseason

Created by: jjkhairaELTE99
Team: 2021-22 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is assuming that klefbom's career is over due to his shoulder issue.

I'm thinking that a buyout timeline ideally would be to ignore a koskinen buyout and just no resign him after this yr. As for neal and turris. It would be best to burry them in the minors for the coming season. This way you get at least some savings this year and then a cheaper & shorter term buyout for neal and turris off the books. this will create maximum space for the following year to shore up any other roster issues.

coleman is by far the best possible add in FA for edmonton and can help make the bottom 6 a legit threat offensively and provide lineup versatility.

Schwartz would be on a shorter term deal basically to be a 2/3yr placeholder until holloway or benson earn their way into a top 6 role.

Murray is the only affordable dman in the market that edmonton can realistically snag that would help improve the team. he is sound defensive dman that is still relatively young

the goaltending tandem is definitely a shorter term solution until a better opportunity is available. smith is solid and koski behind a strong team like the one constructed can hold his own till his contract is up. the goalie issue can be further addressed next year after several bad contracts are finally off the books or are causing minimal dead cap. with only JP and nurse as the key signings to worry about, the oil will be able to sign a strong goalie for the future if konovalov or skinner dont look to be on the right path to being an nhl starter.

with guys like samorukov, broberg, holloway, lavoie and benson being at or near NHL caliber, the team can feasibly be contenders by 2022-23 season and finally have some consistent success.

Detroit passes, I'd rather resign Bernier then have any part of Koskinen. Neither Coleman or Nugent-Hopkins sign those deal. Coleman gets at least $4,000,000 per season and Nugent-Hopkins gets $6,500,000 per season.

I guess the question is do you think stalock is better than Koskinen? Koskinen isn't particularly good, but stalock isn't either and you are effectively paying half of koskinens contract plus stalocks instead (about 3 million). You also have the space for koskinens full salary. You paid a 3rd for a 4th to do that....

Also depending on Smith as your 1a starter at 41 is a terrible. He had a rebound year this year and played well for you. But he's way passed his best before date. He was an okay gamble for your backup option who came through when Koskinen stank. But stalock is a terrible gamble if Smith shows his age....

Coleman is an effective third line player. analysts and people who look at this stuff for a liveving are saying hed get about 3.5 on the open market. As for Nuge, Id expected that he stays in edmonton for at most 6mil. I had it with less but with longer term

yeah I just edited out and kept koski. The way I build it is to create a deeper team upfront so that even an okay tandem can be find because of how good the team infront of them is. big reason why I chose to sign a guy like murray instead of mike rielly or oleksiak or montour

Yeah I wasn't trying to criticize you specifically more just people in general going out of their way to get rid of Koskinen not realizing he's probably a fine backup. And while 4.5 mil is a lot to pay a back up, if you have to pay 2.25 mil to get rid of him there's not as much room for improvement....

makes sense. then you have 2.5 from smith being done (assuming skinner/knovolov is backup) + 4.5 from koski + 1.6 from turris + 3.833 from neal buyout so an extra 12.433 in space for next year is pretty solid

Bernier has made it clear that he wants to stay in Detroit so its Yzerman's decision now.

already changed the roster cause it just made more sense to have a deeper team infront of the current tandem and deal with the goalie issue with a stronger and more cap efficient team the following year, plus gives time to gage where konovalov and skinner are development wise

    Looks good.

I think it’s a little rich for Smith, even after this year I think the most he gets is 2mil

I also think you could use the 2.6 in cap space to get a bit of C depth. Maybe a Glendening? Need someone to compete with McLeod a bit.

the reason for the smith contract is just guessing that holland overpays smith because its holland.

as for the centre I would save that for the following year when neal (BO)and koski and turris are off the books. Maybe get a 3C as a rental but a longer term solution I would save for the offseason next year just to ensure there is space in case nurse and poolparty become more expensive than we think. Also gives time to really see what we have in McLeod because for all we know he is the 3C weve been looking for.
