I’ll assume Jones accepts an extension prior to trade and yeah this is a fair offer for a top defenseman in an inter division trade.

PSA...If you don’t think he’s a top pair defenseman for whatever reason then obviously you wouldn’t trade for him as teams that do value him as a top pair guy will outbid your offer.

While that's a fair attempt for Jones, I really don't think it benefits the Jackets to trade him unless we're getting that #1C.

It does give them multiple young pieces as well as the ammo to move up to get someone like beniers in the draft though

CBJ would want a 1C for Jones so i doubt they would accept. Arizona declines no way they give Keller for Myers and Jake

Other moves will definitely need to be made first but they will need to replace a couple guys on D since they are most likely losing cernak at some point. Braun seems like the kind of guy they like to fill out the team on the back end (ie schenn, coburn etc). Could also retain 500k to make it work for both

Theyre not gonna get a 1C, who’s out there that is on the market that fits the Bill? As I mentioned to someone else, it gives them multiple young pieces as well as the ammo to move up in the draft for beniers

As for Arizona , they get a young RHD as well as a desperately needed 1st since they don’t have a pick in the first 3 rounds. All while not losing production

You misunderstand, they are going to either lose cernak in expansion or trade him prior to get something for him. The Braun deal is just to fill out their roster after the first wave or 2 of free agency.

Care to explain how they’re protecting him when they have 7 forwards with NMC as well as Hedman and mcdonagh with NMC and also needing to protect Sergachev ( who is definitely getting protected over cernak) but yeah, I’m the ass...

We don't need "multiple young pieces", though (that describes two thirds of the current roster), and "flip them for what you REALLY want" is how teams get ripped off.

NMC/NTC You know what I meant they all have clauses that require protection. Now back to you being wrong about cernak...

I just don’t think there’s a 1C on the market that they’re gonna get. Gonna have to give up much more that Jones for Eichel

There possibly isn't. The point is less "we're going to trade him for a #1C" and more "we're not trading him unless we get this thing we badly need, because the plan is to keep him."

The crux of the problem is we don’t know his intentions. Is he willing to stay? Then don’t trade him. If he wants out, then we have to change our approach. We shift from a retool to a rebuild. We would need to start collecting young pieces to either build around or trade for more draft and prospect capital. We wouldn’t be needing a 1c at that point as he would be out of his prime by the time we are competing again. (Unless eichel but he’ll want out too if we’re rebuilding). Trade Jones for a collection of young players and high draft picks. Like this trade. And trade Zach for a young center man like turcotte or perfetti. Answers need to be had before the draft so we can then draft a defenseman (good defenseman draft year) to replace them in the future as the goal would be to flip Zach for a center prospect and obtain the other 1c prospect in the next years draft. This is going to be either a retool where we move out a first and roster player for a top 6 center man, or we just decide to tear it down and start again with a wealth of riches.
