Rangers should not wait for prospects - learn from past mistakes and sell them

Created by: AFox23
Team: 2021-22 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: May 28, 2021
Published: May 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In the early and mid-2000's, after seven straight seasons of not making the playoffs, we had built up one of the better prospect pools in the NHL. Problem was, we waited too long for these guys to develop and they lost trade value. Most of them were dealt for very little return in late 2000's when we could have used the extra pieces.

LET'S NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN

All of these guys were at one time a 1st round pick or a top-50 prospect

Dan Blackburn
Pavel Brendl
Alexei Cherepanov
Nigel Dawes
Tim Erixon
Lee Falardeau
Evgeny Grachev
David Inman
Hugh Jessiman
Lauri Korpikoski
Jamie Lundmark
Manny Malhotra
Dylan McIlrath
Al Montoya
Mike Mottau
Petr Prucha
Bobby Sanguinetti
Fedor Tjutin

Chris Drury was a Ranger between 2007-11. He probably knows this more than anyone. Hopefully he remembers the help that didn't come because we waited. Let's not wait this time.

this is great and all (if you ignore trade values, pretty sure you overpaid for most and vastly underpaid for RoR) but you’ve only got like 2 forwards that kill penalties lol

I understand what ur trying to do, and I know that us Rangers fans go both ways, but we have to find a happy middle between trading some prospects or young players and keeping others. In my opinion it looks like this

Keep
Lafrenière
Kravtsov
Lundkvist
Fox
Miller
Lindgren
Shesterkin

Anyone else including Kaapo or Buch (Not Both) could and should be moved to try and help the team now. I can't imagine moving every single prospect though

Not enough there to interest the Jets in moving Perfetti.

Might as well not draft at all with this mentality.. trade the picks and fire the scouts. Buy players through OS and FA and trade off picks for other teams prospects at a higher pick price but knowing that it wasn’t a dud. Yes, the approach that no NHL team has ever fully done except around the time of which you are speaking of. OS Bure, pay Holik 9m, I could go on but the point is where did we get with that mentality back then. At least there wasn’t a hard cap in those days so 140m roster with some luxury taxes was actually possible, but still not successful 😂😂

Preserving penalty killers was not really the point here.

Yes, I 100% agree. I should have said that I am not advocating trading all of them, or doing all of these deals. Was using the trades to illustrate a point. And I agree with your list.
And would want to keep Buchnevich over Kakko.

Too many Rangers want to wait on these prospects, and I'm sure many will be good, but we cannot wait on all of them (we don't even have spots to play all of them)

Yes, Seth Jones. But read the post. It wasn't really about the individual trades. More about taking a certain philosophy.

I didn't say that. It is not an all or nothing approach. But we cannot wait around for guys to develop when we have are core in place.

Ok, it seemed with all the trades and statements that you wanted to sell the farm for 1 or 2 good runs

Quantity is not going to be accepted in a Jones trade. Quality only.

Unless you've got a sure-thing bluechipper or two hiding in there, it's not quality. Given that I don't see any of Miller, Lafreniere, Kravtsov, Kakko, or Jones in there, I'm pretty sure that's your B-list at best.

Fox would have signed with us a few months later anyways. But I’m good with making trades. If you completely misunderstood my comment it had nothing to do we never making deals.it had to do with being smart about our youth and future. For example, none of our A list youth should be moved for Kessel. Our top 9 is all better than him today and for the future. Making a barkov deal, sure if the price is right. OS to Barzal last season would have been great. But the reason we are in the position with the youth we have now is because of 10 years of development and asset management which has been successful. Not the old “sell the farm for today” mentality.

All of the first round picks you mention didn't lose value because the Rangers waited too long, its was because most of them were TERRIBLE 1st round picks. Big difference between those picks and recent picks like Miller, Chytil, Lunquist, Kakko, Laffy, etc. These are GOOD picks and they need to be developed. You obviously didn't learn from Sather's mistakes of trading away picks and youth for aging vets trying to "win now". Rangers are on the right path with these kids, they just need to add in some grit and let them grow.

They said this exact same thing in 2000's. "This time, our prospects are good". They'd use Manny Malhotra as the example of bad, whatever current guy as a good prospect worth waiting from him to develop.

Sather's mistake....was waiting too long to trade his prospects. So he was forced to deal away picks to get the assets he needed. If he had starting trading them 2-3 years earlier, he would have been able to keep his 1st picks.

Also, not all of these guys were 1sts. But they were all top-50 ranked prospects, many of them top-10 'sure things'.

We waited, we waited, we waited... they eventually let many of them go for nothing. Late picks, future considerations, etc.

WE CANNOT REPEAT OUR MISTAKES

Okay, mea culpa. Not sure I buy that assessment myself, but I'm not a full-time Rangers fan so I could be off-base. Still not all that interested in that package.
