Canucks you can't give up a top 10 pick and a high 2nd plus other assets for a rental if you're not already a cup contender

    Plus Jones is over rated.

What if he wasn't a rental?

If VAN gets him for $2.7M next season, that's an improvement on their D without spending a lot of money. He hasn't had the strongest year too so his cap wouldn't go up as much as people say so you are basically swapping out Schmidt for Jones (which you should do 10 times out of 10).

I still wouldn't do it. Wait one more year and you can have your pick of Pulock, Parayko, or Jones in FA without giving up any assets

That's not going to pass muster. We're looking for at least one blue-chipper in there, and that isn't present in this package.

I get that approach for sure! Trader Jim said he wanted to be aggressive this year and if he can get that kind of deal out of a Jones trade (maybe announce the Petey/Hughes/Jones deals at the same time since they have the same agent too) then that could definitely be a possibility.

I very much doubt that you can get a guy like Pulock, Parayko or even Jones to sign in VAN unless they have their rights to negotiate or let them play out a year.

That's understandable, I guess it depends on the mindset of what the management in CBJ wants out of a package. They already have three first in this draft, so unless there's a guy sitting at #9 that they really want, that might not be the most attractive piece.

Schmidt is in the deal because he's locked in on term that could be attractive to CBJ and wouldn't be a complete downgrade on Jones. The other assets are projects too.

    Thanks for your input!

Most teams aren't gonna be able to spend big money on FA, in terms of teams with cap to spend the Canucks could be the top destination
