Not interested in paying a huge premium for Jones, who wants to test free agency, and won't live up to the massive contract he gets.

Don't know the prospects well enough to say for sure, but something futures-based is probably going to be structured along the lines of "blue-chipper + 1st".

He said he wants to test free agency..... I would assume that’s regardless of whether or not someone trades for him. I’m aware of who Seth Jones is, my question is about logic. Why give up all of the premium assets that you’re asking for when I could essentially have the same chance at him in a years time regardless?

I don’t think a first and a blue chipper is terrible. Jarventie is borderline blue chip, Lassi’s probably a B prospect or borderline A and the second should be relatively high, so almost a first. White is a good middle 6 center. This package probably fills what you’re asking for but I see zero reason for a team like Ottawa to pull the trigger if there isn’t an extension attached to it.

It doesn't. Because I didn't say "the equivalent of a blue chipper plus a 1st", I said "blue chipper plus a 1st". Hockey players and picks are not fungible assets; you can't swap out one of those with two lesser pieces and call it a day, because we have quantity and depth and need quality.

Again, you can ask for that all you want but realistically any team trading for Jones is only going to be paying for a one year rental and not for his full value as a player. Take this however you want but I wouldn’t want Ottawa to give that package up for Jones if there is no extension attached to it. On the other hand if there was an extension I’d be comfortable paying a lot more. But the fact that he’s said that he’s going to test the market means there will likely be no extension regardless of the team he’s traded to and you return will be diminished significantly because of it.

Not the same situation but Hall got traded as a rental for a 2nd. There may have been a better package, there may not have. Columbus would be lucky to get what you’re asking for.

If Columbus agrees to this offer I take it any day of the week.

That's already being accounted for by the fact that we're not dogmatically insisting on a #1C as the return.

Then we disagree about his value as a rental. At least with a regular rental there's a reasonable chance that you can resign them. If Jones is intent on testing free agency then that will affect his value more than you realize.

You're asking for more than Ottawa was asking for Karlsson coming off of being runner-up for the Norris twice as well as winning it twice. Plus Karl was opening to resigning.
