Toronto 2017-2018

Created by: bwish13
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 18, 2017
Published: Jan. 22, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don't think Toronto needs to go out and sign Shattenkirk to a long deal, or pay him a massive amount of money. Though he is very good in the offensive zone, he is not the most active defense man in his own zone.
Most of the signings are bringing back players. Not sure of value but where one person would get less another would get more, so I think the cap space comes out about the same.
Signing Condon might be hard as he will be highly coveted after his stellar season, so McElhinney might be back or maybe Budaj as he is having a good season in LA. Either way we need a backup capable of playing 20-30 games in my opinion.
Not sure quite how RFA compensation works, but Calvin de Haan has been quietly good in New York and is capable of playing in his own zone as he currently sits 3rd in the league in blocked shots at 2.6 per game.

Thoughts are welcome, and if I'm off on compensation feel free to let me know.

Looks like Zaitsev and Condon have deserved to earn more money. Condon might have looking for a starter job after his good run in Ottawa.
Check out the compensation rules for signing RFAs. I wouldn't put much credence in blocked shot totals. Might mean your opponent has the puck, and even if he does, you're not checking him but letting him blast away at the net.

Thought behind Zaitsev money was less than Morgan Rielly as he is their #1. Toronto has begun to shut down opponents taking so many shots at their net, so a shot blocker could limit that number even more.

I'm not saying deHaan isn't deserving of the money, I just doubt the statistic as being very useful. Although the Leafs are giving up "lots of shots", there goalies aren't under constant barrage of having 2, 3, or 4 shots in rapid succession. Goaltending for the Leafs has become easier, than in previous years.
