I think that framework has value for both sides, and is definitely something both teams would look at.
I think the big issue for Toronto is they don't have anymore flexibility. Sure they have a few more players for the same money, but there's no option to save on the cap.
I will say that, as someone who has watched a lot of Marner the last 5 years, his renown as a defensively responsible winger is very overblown. Being a good penalty killer doesn't mean you're good defensively, he skates by lots of pucks and has trouble clearing the blue when under pressure. I also don't think he can drive his own line, based on how poor his shot is.
