Leafs 16/17- RH dman Anaheim, E Kane from Buffalo

Created by: Britishbulldog
Team: 2016-17 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2017
Published: Jan. 22, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
3 things I am thinking:
1)Anaheim is almost $4 mil over the cap
2)they have an aging core that will need to try to win it all sooner than later
3)They can't protect all their dmen.

I would think that Manson is the odd dman out since Anaheim has to protect NMC Bieksa and will probably add Lindholm, Vatanen and Fowler but that would leave only 4 spots for forwards and they HAVE TO protect Perry, Getzlaf and Kesler. That leaves them to choose between Rakell or Silfverberg. I can't believe the league is allowing the GMs who were idiots with some of the NMC/NTCs they gave out to be able to ask the players to rescind them.

E Kane has still been having problems even though he is in a new market and was rumoured earlier in the year to be on the block. He is a risk but I hope the Leafs management can turn this young man around. He is a year younger than Kadri and Gardiner.

If the Leafs can get Froese and Smith in 12 more games this season they can be re-signed for next season (like Al Montoya was) to be the 2 eligible expansion draft forwards to go with Stoner on defense. Sparks or Bibeau will be re-signed to cover the goalie requirements for the draft.

I am hoping a playoff run will get Nylander ready to take Bozak's position at center next season and that Rychel could take Komarov's 3rd line LW position beside Kadri and Kapanen on Kadri's RW in place of Nylander. That way Bozak and Komarov can be moved for assets between the end of the playoffs this year and next season's TDL.

....oh....and I threw a couple of silly trades in on the bottom because it bugs me that the Leafs lost those 3rd round draft picks....

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Manson, Josh
  2. Ritchie, Nick
  3. Stoner, Clayton
Additional Details:
Manson gives the Leafs a decent #4 dman and Stoner fits the criteria for expansion to replace Marincin if he can play 5 games for the Leafs and is the logical salary dump for Anaheim to help the Leafs sweeten the deal by helping Anaheim get over $3 MIL off the cap.

Ritchie is the cost of getting a discounted JVR for 2 years as the aging Ducks try to win another Cup.
ANA
  1. Corrado, Frank
  2. Lindberg, Tobias
  3. Marincin, Martin
  4. Soshnikov, Nikita
  5. van Riemsdyk, James ($2,125,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Since Manson will most likely not be able to be protected by Anaheim they can translate him and Ritchie into top LW forward, a 6th dman in Marincin, and 3 young-ish players.

Marincin also gives Anaheim a dman to expose, Corrado is a young-ish RH dman to develop and Soshnikov and Lindberg gives them decent LH prospects that can be sent to the minors without having to pass through waivers to save on cap space AND don't need to be exposed in the expansion draft.

The retained salaries help the Leafs to sweeten the deal for Anaheim who is currently over $4 MIL over the cap.
2.
TOR
  1. Kane, Evander
Additional Details:
E Kane has continued to be a problem in Buffalo and although Atlanta, Winnipeg and Buffalo haven't been able to get him to mature and show some character I am hoping a management team with the presence of Shanahan, Lou and Babcock could get this young man straightened out. Most of my friends have said to avoid E Kane but he would be perfect as Matthews LW with his speed, soft hands and willingness to fight if needed.

If he doesn't straighten out by the end of next season then the Leafs let him walk as a UFA and lose 4 good prospects for nothing.
BUF
  1. Bracco, Jeremy
  2. Johnsson, Andreas
  3. Laich, Brooks
  4. Leipsic, Brendan
  5. Valiev, Rinat
Additional Details:
Good prospect and NY State native Bracco with the Marlies leading scorer, a skilled LW prospect and one of the Leafs top dmen in the AHL (swap him with Dermott if wanted).

Laich is a salary dump and the Marlies would request he be loaned to them like Ottawa did with Matt Frattin which would mean it would cost Buffalo cap space but no actual money.
3.
TOR
  1. Miller, Drew
  2. Vitale, Joe
  3. 2017 3rd round pick (TOR)
DET
  1. Greening, Colin
Additional Details:
I simply want the Leaf pick back that was stolen by the league. :)

After the league took 2 3rd round picks from the Leafs they realized that it was an idiotic rule and rescinded it...but never gave the Leafs back their picks.

The Marlies would request he be loaned to them like Ottawa did with Matt Frattin which would mean it would cost Detroit cap space but no actual money
4.
TOR
  1. 2018 3rd round pick (TOR)
NJD
  1. Michalek, Milan
Additional Details:
Yeah I want the Leafs 3rd pick back in 2018 as well....

The Marlies would request he be loaned to them like Ottawa did with Matt Frattin which would mean it would cost NJ cap space which they have lots of but no actual money

Might drop the Marlies out of the AHL elite status they currently hold as a team though....

Really it is only 4 players and the Marlies are most likely going to miss the playoffs all together this year anyway so I feel that the Leafs might as well look to leverage any decent assets they have as it can't get much worse on the farm team.

Here are my issues with this:
1) Anahiem is at the cap, not over it. Despres is on LTIR with his concussion history. His career is most likely over, but if it's not he would definitely not be back until the playoffs, where cap is not an issue.
2) Beiksa will waive his NMC because there is almost 0% chance he is taken and if he does not Anahiem will buy him out to solve that issue.
3) yes, Anahiem does still need to move a defenceman to save their offence, but they need to make a series of deals, a shady deal to circumvent the expansion draft rules, or take back a young asset like a Kapanen that does not need to be protected, unless they are okay with losing Cogliano, or Vermette.
4) Buffalo can keep his problems. The Shanaplan started with removing all the bad attitudes and influences from the locker room to start a new. Why would they then bring in a player that may just need the proper mentorship (3rd times a charm? Doubt it) but could risk destroying all the good things everybody is raving about?
5) s*** happens it sucks it happened but I'd do it again to get the Leagues best coach and fixer (gm) in the league.
6) the Marlies are doing very well right now and will almost definitely make the playoffs. Next year looks even better with the young guys they have coming out of junoirs and Europe so don't ruin a good thing, we haven't had a lot of them to cheer about in years.

Honestly to me these trades are either overpayments, asking too much or you're grabbing the wrong players. The Shanaplan is working right now, the only thing they'd need is a developing or young roster RHD, which they'll probably target in the off season.

No value to the veteran players buried, and playing sparingly, with the Marlies! CR needs to reevaluate the Marlies or at least attend a game, as they have been less than average, mediocre over the last 6-8 weeks after a decent start! Too many contracts thrown in where players are B prospects at best, and some won't even be brought back as Leafs will need contract room to sign more recent draft choices out of Junior and Europe! Most aren't any more than a throw in to a package at best! I do agree with CR though that a gamble on Kane is a shot in the dark and very "NON" Lou!

1) Typically where LITR gets a team in trouble is in the bonuses. Anaheim has less then $1 MIL of possible bonuses.
2) I assume that but haven't seen that confirmed anywhere yet so it is not set in stone yet...expected though.
3) The young assets were Soshnikov who doesn't need to be protected and Lindberg who is a likened to JVR. Big, floats defensively, has offensive instincts and doesn't need to be protected either. I am sure that they want to protect 3 dmen and 7 forwards and if Bieksa waives then all is good in Anaheim for 3 dmen so we certainly agree on that fact that one will still need to go.
4)Everyone I have talked to doesn't want E Kane near the Leafs and especially their core youth. Thought I would float it here as well to see if there would be any takers.
5) Absolutely agree. Just still bugs me that out all the 30 teams only the Leafs were hurt by this.
6) No...actually the Marlies are bad this year.

So 5 out of 6 is pretty good.

That's fair. The veteran trades for draft picks was simply me whining that the Leafs lost them in the first place. Totally silly but just shining a light on them if anyone forgot.

I actually agree with all of this.

My actual trade that I would look at is the Leafs needing a 2nd pairing RH dman and the Ducks wanting a top LW scorer. JVR is an overpayment for Manson who was rumoured to be worth a prospect, a 2nd pick and a NHL dman like Marincin or Polak. The trade could have simply been that with no JVR.

With the LITR Anaheim is still tight to the cap so moving Stoner is a priority for them. Also keeping 1/2 of JVR's salary is attractive to the Ducks. Ritchie has not matched his draft year hype yet no matter what anybody says...similar to JVR when the Leafs traded for him...so for the Leafs taking Stoner's contract off the Ducks hands as well as the retained salary on a awesome contract the Leafs inherit a player with potential.

The team, as it is, will continue to improve without major changes. With draft picks being brought in and especially proper development the Shanaplan should not be rushed or circumvented.

A single trade for a 2nd pairing RH dman on a Armchair Gm site with no 'blockbuster' atmosphere is rather non-sexy.

Yea 3/4 best wing prospects and 1/3 top D prospects for an issue ridden streaky winger...Its not that our management is good and could MAYBE fix him, its that they're good because they don't let these types of people taint our young impressionable guys
