sens decline easily

I dont think easily. almost 5 mil for the next 4 years is a lot. Swap two underwhelming young players and Sens get a much higher pick. Why would they say no

I agree here. White doesn't fit into the future plans here

Because one of those “underwhelming young players” has considerably higher upside and versatility and played really well down the stretch? Much higher pick is stupid to say, it’s a 2 round difference in the middle rounds, that means next to nothing. All Thompson has is size, he’s not more than a 4th liner. White is at WORST an effective 2-way 3C.

White isn't in our future plans. Getting something positive for him is good

Thompson is not positive

Thompson sucks ass. I don't think a 3rd for White and a 5th is good enough. White is expensive for what he brings, but I don't agree that he can't fit with Ottawa long term. He just needs a different role. He's not a C, but I think he can be a good middle six winger

Tell that to DJ
Sens need the centre more than the winger right now.
Taking Thomson because you want to bail on a contract that some believe was too much last season, but is actually in line with a middle6 centre, is short sighted. White made $4MM last season, and who cares about the cap while the Sens are well below the limit. Next season, White needs to produce more, since his pay will now match his cap.
Look at it this way
cap $81.5MM
Two healthy scratches at $750K each is $1.5MM, that leaves $80MM for 20 players dressed, or $4MM each. White just needs to be slightly above average to earn his $4.75MM.
If a 3C produces 35 points, and a 2C produces 50 points, White can earn his check at around 40+ points, while playing solid defence. In two seasons when the cap goes up, he doesn't need to produce as much since the avg goes up, but he should. The only time White's contract should come into question is if he produces less than 0.50 points per game, or he doesn't improve enough to earn the final season salary. The team is three seasons from needing to decide on Whites production to value.
As for position, this season he's needed as a centre, next season the team will look different, and we'll see if he's still a centre or moves to the wing.
Tage Thompson isn't the answer
