How much cap do we have to play with

Description
LTIR guys are the ones that make sense to trade

The team needs a retool. Only one of the core four that makes sense to trade is Marner. bye.

Holl is a good defenceman but he's not in the top four of a winning team, and if you're paying a top 6 guy 2m that's bad cap management. upgrade on him.

Mikheyev is an offensive black hole, I love him but you can't have him anywhere in your top 9 and if he's on your fourth line making 1.6, that's bad cap management. someone can do his job for league minimum salary.

I'd like to call this "true cap space" because I assigned a league minimum player into every available roster position under these pretenses, and the number you get at the end (in this case, 17.8 million) is the number you get to upgrade the team with.

For the leafs those upgrades would come at resigning Hyman, trading for a new top four D, a 1B goalie, etc.

Pretty unrealistic that you can find eight NHL regulars making just 750,000

they're just placeholders for cap logistics. You have to have a 23 man roster, and every guys gotta make at least 750k per league min salary. so if you fill up all the open space with placeholders making min, the cap space you get is the true number of cap space you have to upgrade the team.

You cap theory is right. It's just that the Leafs would be much poorer team than they are now.

changes need to be made, tampa got swept and lost a bunch of rentals and then went on to win the next year. they were "poorer" than the year before.

Add back the $13m (net) from LTIR guys. And ~$6m for Hyman. And you get back to zero.

I think that is baseline to work off of.
