Unless you're taking back half of Marner's contract, you can forget about the draft picks. Still, if what you want to do is get bigger and tougher, this accomplishes what you want. Don't get greedy.

Marner doesn't come close to replacing Ovechkin and the Caps are going to want their picks to begin restocking. If you want the best bruiser in the league, best be prepared to pay for it with a player that everyone knows Toronto would love to be free of.

cool, it's not about marner replacing ovechkin for the leafs though. It's about getting value for Marner, and that trade isnt value for Marner.
If you want Marner, then you're going to need to do better than a significantly worse player who is also the dirtiest player in the league and some late picks.

Don't know if you have The Athletic or not but LeBrun posted an article that implies Marner would probably go for a kings ransom. NHL executives are not smart people.

There’s zero point for the caps to make this trade. Marner for wilson straight up might be fair, but I still wouldn’t want that albatross of a contract. Wilson scored more in the playoffs than Marner in 2 less games. Wilson was also a force to be reckoned with in the cup run. He also brings much more to the table than Marner. Caps decline.

I love how Toronto fans, who for years have crapped on Carey Price's "toxic" "untradeable" contract, suddenly see Marner as the second coming of Mark Messier. Let's face it, the scouting report is in: Marner is a highly-skilled, top-6 forward who consistently fails in the playoffs. When you add in the fact that his contract is the 7th most expensive in the league, it would take a pretty ballsy GM to tell his owner not only that he's worth $22M over the next two years, but that they'll be draining the prospect pool to get him. When you look at having to have all three of need, cap space and a secure GM, that's a pretty short list of potential dumping grounds.

Think you're selling Marner a bit short. He's an elite winger, at least in the regular season. He also thinks very highly of himself and has some hero complex with being in Toronto. A trade could be the wakeup call he needs and I think more people would be interested. Toronto's not dumping Marner for scraps.
