Time to stop banging your heads on the proverbial brick wall

Created by: justaBoss

Description
Do you know what is the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over again hoping to get a different result. That is the brick wall of spending 3/4 of your budget on 7 players, and trying to build the rest of your depth via filling the open slots with the remaining quarter. It's time to stop doing that. I think it has finally been proven that it won't lead to anything other than a miserable failure.

I'll say, move few key assets from the usual roster and focus on building that depth. Get a new GM and/or a coach that can instill the high demans work ethic in the process. I seriously think Tortorella could work in this role. Keep Keefe as an assistant to develop their actual play while having Torts running the mental side of the show, because the current mindset of the Leafs players simply doesn't seem to be professional enough when it comes to producing when it matters.

You guys have nothing to lose at this point. Building a pseudo-contender is not going to help you win anything but the president's trophy, which is not the trophy you guys aren't after.

    Expansion draft pick
    SEA
    1. Kerfoot, Alexander
    Additional Details:
Let's start with the obvious one. Kerfoot's good, but also an ideal target for Seattle.
    2.
    TOR
    1. Reinhart, Sam [RFA Rights]
    2. Ristolainen, Rasmus ($2,700,000 retained)
    3. 2021 2nd round pick (BUF)
    4. 2022 3rd round pick (BUF)
    BUF
    1. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]
    2. Marner, Mitchell
    Additional Details:
    2021 NHL Entry Draft deal.

Marner's value has plummeted after yet another piss poor playoff performance. Nothing justifies him being the highest paid player of his position in the league right now. He needs a restart somewhere else. Buffalo could be an option, since in there he doesn't actually have to worry about the playoffs that much lol.

In all seriousness, both Leafs and Sabres need to retool big time, and this sort of blockbuster with players rumored on the move could be the big splash both teams need. Sabres chance the outlook of their roster big time, and TOR adds two very playoff hungry players.
    3.
    TOR
    1. Domi, Max ($2,650,000 retained)
    2. Jenner, Boone
    3. 2022 3rd round pick (TBL)
    CBJ
    1. Hållander, Filip
    2. Liljegren, Timothy
    3. 2022 2nd round pick (TOR)
    Additional Details:
    2021-22 Offseason deal.

I do imagine that Columbus is tanking for Wright or Bedard. They have some good depth assets in there for Leafs to use. CBJ adds some prospects stuck in their system, Leafs add on some actual depth, other than random KHL players or randon veterans playing with the league minimum contract somewhere just because of their name.
    4.
    TOR
    1. Kempe, Adrian
    2. MacDermid, Kurtis
    3. 2022 2nd round pick (LAK)
    4. 2023 3rd round pick (LAK)
    LAK
    1. Der-Arguchintsev, Semyon
    2. Rielly, Morgan
    Additional Details:
    2021-22 Offseason deal.

I know LA fans are going to rip me a new one since I touched their golden boy, but it's been rumored that LA is after a puck moving left defenseman, and Rielly fits that bill perfectly. Gaining Rielly for a 35-ish point 25-year old forward and some picks seem pretty good haul for me. LA add a prospect as well, and TOR gets a depth D-man. Imo it's a win-win. I'd love to add a re-signing condition here but since they're banned, I can't do sh*t about that.
    5.
    TOR
    1. Khudobin, Anton
    2. Sekera, Andrej
    3. 2022 4th round pick (DAL)
    DAL
    1. Holl, Justin
    2. 2023 3rd round pick (LAK)
    Additional Details:
    2021-22 Offseason deal.

If Bishop is returning, DAL needs to move Dobby. And it'll most likely will happen pretty cheap. The deal also involves a D swap for cap reasons for TOR and benefits in terms of handedness for Dallas.
    6.
    TOR
    MTL
    1. Hutchinson, Michael
    Additional Details:
Waivers pick. If MTL loses Allen in the ExD, they need a 3G behind Price and Primeau. Hutch comes cheaper than signing a league minimum guy.

Reinhart's pending RFA this year. In this case Leafs would have full control over him and his future contract. Knowing Dubas' MO, he's gonna get paid big.

That's just it. He's a RFA, and by signing a qualifying offer, he can be a UFA in the summer of 2022. Now since it known that he was out of Buffalo, Reinhart in this case would be open to sign and trade discussion.

He could do that, but that QO is pretty low. Only $5.2M. I reckon he'd be willing to sign long-term with a playoff team.

    Your stupid

No he isn't. He's a very knowledgeable hockey fan and p.s. he's not a leafs or sabers fan (he's a Dallas fan) so he has no dog in this fight.

I'd be surprised if they actually traded Eichel honestly. It seems logical, but I feel like Adams will overprice the guy.

Combine Eichel and Marner and try to reach those playoffs. At their day you have two extremely great players.

Personally, I think Eichel gets traded this off-season, however, one very overlooked fact here is Buffalo holds all the cards, which is why they will get good value. Eichel is under contract so he can't sit out the year, and if he plays bad it will severly limit his market in turn making it harder to get traded. IMO

If it’s not working for you guys with more than 2 great players,
why would it work for us?
    It’s not gonna happen imo
And Jack most likely is getting traded

He's not a leafs fan he's a stars fan so this is an outside perspective.

I do think Eichel will be on the market...and Adams will probably overprice him. He's probably going to start the 2021-22 season with Buffalo, provided he's healthy at the season start, and then possibly pull a Dubois after yet another poor start.

Honestly, I'd love to be wrong here, but that is my prediction as of now.

Reinhart is a hell of a player and would do great with the leafs, which is why we would need too extend him as part of the deal.

He would have to be in order for the leafs to consider, otherwise he would hold all the leverage.

I read over my response and I botched it, my bad. What I meant was IMO he gets traded this offseason and here's why... I think a team will overpay because a franchise center doesn't make it too market very often. That being said, your prediction makes a ton of sense as well and I could easily see it coming to fruition also.

I have a side question for you... Do you think there would be any chance of a Marner for Eichel trade? And if so what else would we need too add?

No, not really. Dubois for Laine trade proved that it fundamentally doesn't make sense trading a top line center to a top line winger. Eichel for Marner is that kind of move, but completely on steroids.

12th of April, 2019. That is the last day Marner has been able to score a playoff goal. Game 1 against Bruins. He scored two that night, one of them being a penalty shot. A player with that kind of statistic, topped with the highest paid salary of his position will not return a franchise level asset for them. I don't see anything viable for Leafs to make it happen if you ask me.

Sam reinhart is one of the most criminally UNDERRATED players in the league

I dont care if he is underrated or not. He is no where near as good as Marner if he doubled his production and doesnt have any Playoff experience to even show if he steps it up in the post-season or not.

    This trade is insane..

He was called one of the most overrated players in the league in the post I was responding to and it's the only thing I addressed. I said nothing about the trade. Also, maybe look at 25 goals in 50ish games without eichel while playing center and realize maybe you have no idea what you are talking about...double his production... get out out of here with that garbagw
