Burk wants more physical team

Created by: Rushambo
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 2, 2021
Published: Jun. 3, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trades proposed are main components and there may need to be picks and/or prospects added from each side to balance out. This is with understanding Pens have little of both picks and/or prospects currently.

Pens opt to protect Bleuger and Tanev and expose McCann and Zucker and Kracken take younger player with lesser contract in McCann.

Pens re-up RFAs Bleuger and ZAR on 2 year deals with increase in pay. Also slight increase for Zohorna. Also re-up with Gaudreau with slight increase in pay to be fourth line center with Bleuger moving up to 3rd line center.

Ceci exceeded expectations and was solid with Matheson. Gets brought back with increase in pay. Hopefully feels it was a good fit and does go for more money to place he may not fit (as had bad experience with Toronto).

Hate to give up Guentzel but need to give to get. Tkachuk gives more physicality but still has skill. Jake is better goal scorer with good contract. Flames retain $1M so those two balance out next 2 years. May hurt when contact is up and Jake is playing for $6M and Mathew is getting raise on $7M salary. Pens get increase in defense with Hanafin for Peterson to make up for giving up better forward.

Burke will want to get more physical D man so go for yearly trade bait in Rasmussen. I know he is not great d-man but plays physical. Hopefully D like Hanafin can balance him out. Buffalo retain to move him. Also look to get more physical RW in Reinhardt (although not sure contract will be sufficient for the RFA). Buffalo gets 2 wingers in Zucker and Rust who are top 6 and can be flipped for other assets in offseason or trade deadline. Also get Rikkola who seems like he will never get on ice with Pens.

Marino has to be moved given will have 3 RD. Get physical winger who can score. In Wood. NJ has lots of LD but can use young RD. Marino is more valuable so NJ probably adds.

Don’t want to move Malkin but need salary space. Also pipe dream to have local Pittsburgh guys play for home team so swapped for Trochek. As Geno has NMC may need to be 3 way if will not go to Carolina. Perhaps Geno to Fla with Fla sending something to Car. Hopefully Trochek would re-up at similar amount to play for hometown team.

Also brought hometown boy Saad back as UFA. He probably gets offered more elsewhere but takes discount to make this AGM work.

Crosby gets bigger wings for physicality of playoffs and the pens get bigger and more physical without giving up a ton of the skill/speed they have.

Have at it and let me know what works and does not work and how the start of deals would need balanced out.

P.S.- would also like to bring local boy Gibson home too… just couldn’t see any way to make that happen in terms of salary cap or giving up sufficient assets in a deal.

Devils say yes probably, Buffalo trade is interesting, but Pitt would need to add draft capital, Calgary doesnt pick up the phone, Why would Pitt trade Malkin for a worse center?

Hanifin isn't better than Pettersson.

Based on what? Points? If you're using points to compare d-men you've already lost

No, Hanifin having a massive breakout year as a clear top pair caliber defenseman, having a solid 200 ft game, and very good hockey IQ.

Why would I base it off points when Hanifin was extremely unlucky in points this year?

Malkin trade is necessary for freeing up money to address other areas. Trochek is half the cap hit of Malkin. May need balanced out with pick/prospect if Pens are giving up more value.

I personally think Guentzel > Tkachuk and Hanafin > Petersen. However I think it isn’t a huge difference with the particular players. Jake is a better scorer and Tkachuk is more physical. Jake is 35-40 goal scorer with Tkachuk being more a 25-30 goal scorer. With how seasons went for both clubs, thought they both could use this type of shake-up. Once again, may need to be picks and/or prospects added for one or both sides to balance out.

By that logic, Marcus Pettersson is better than Adam Fox

Sure trocheck isn’t a superstar but he still gets the job done. I would have considered that trade if Malkin was at the beginning of his prime and not some washed up vet who never got a chance at the top line.

Wouldn’t be one for one, but there could be a deal worked around this. We give u Wood, Butcher, 2021 isles first, and 2022 3rd; maybe there’s a discussion

there is no discussion. Marino is a future 1RD who just turned 24 not long ago, that is evident in his play. That doesn't get you a legit 1RD from any team.
Butcher sucks. The Isles pick is late, a 3rd is like nothing. Woods, is ok, but he's a bottom 6 in PIT.
No team, is giving you a future 1RD for that. None.

Not sure Marino is a #1 right D. Might be capped at #3 D, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I hope he turns into a #1 if he stays with Pens. However, 3 goals and 10 assists when Letang/Dumo take on other teams top players. Rasmussen coming in via trade has slightly better stats and plays more physical (which is what Pens want). Plus, he played against top competition for Buf. If given sheltered 2nd/3rd pair matchups, may produce better stats. Agree that Devils need to add to get Marino… just not sure how much. Hextall likes having picks and this may be way to get a 1st rounder. Have to give to get and this team has not cut it the past few years. I think the trades above make team more playoff ready for war of attrition and meets goal of getting more physical without totally giving up skill. Also, Hextall has to say want to keep core together and likes team as is or other GMs would lowball him if they knew he was going to turn over core/roster.

He's not a top pair defenseman. Not even close. He's bad defensively. You can't call a d-man who can't perform their most important role a top pair d-man. He wasn't even good offensively this year.

No, because Adam Fox is actually very good defensively too? He actually has a great "200 foot game"

My point exactly, Hanifin has developed a great 200 foot game with Tanev on his side and you clearly aren't watching the games, only looking at stats isn't gonna make Hanifin look good. If you watch a Flames game, Hanifin was our most consistent defenceman, on top of that he's young and has a very team friendly contract, defencemen don't peak until later in their careers, and at least to me it looks like Hanifin is about to hit that exact same trajectory.
