Why is there a taxi squad next year?

I think the value is close with the 9th overall pick for Reilly but I doubt the Canucks make that move.

Columbus might be a target as they have 3 1st round picks but they would likely require an extension.

If Reilly is extended to a decent contract then yes.

Canucks aren't trading that pick.

Even then, I'm not sure the nucks need another offensive Dman on the left side when they have Hughes and Rathbone.

Reilly plays on the PK and isn't really a liability defensively. Vancouver would have 5 defensemen who could play on the powerplay if this deal goes through (Hughes, Reilly, Schmidt, Rathbone and Myers). That's great offensive depth without significant defense liabilities if Hughes bounces back. Myers is the one I'd like to dump from that group but I don't think anyone will take him without sweetners. PK units would be Schmidt - Myers and Reilly - Hamonic/UFA.

It's not a great shut down defensive core, but it is a great two way defensive core.

I agree but IMO I think they would value the 9OA pick above getting a guy who will take minutes/opportunities away from Rathbone.

Rathbone has played like 3 games. He's not as much of an impact player as Reilly is now. Long term one of them can play their off side or they can just run three strong LHD like Tampa. When your bringing in a player who actually improves your team considerably, the concern you listed is irrelevant.
