Aside from Makar, I don't know if I agree on the "massive" pay increases. Sure, Landy and Grubauer are going to get raises, but they should be in the $3 million/year range from what they're making now. Makar's going to rake it in no matter what (bridge or long-term). Jost will get a raise, but it's not going to be $4 million, he's probably more in the $2 million x 2-3 year range considering this is his first year of decent production. Definitely going to take work to keep it together, but there's room there. And in two years time, EJ's deal expires and that money goes directly to Mackinnon's raise, so it's definitely possible.
As for relevancy, yeah, they need to make it to the finals this year. Anything less will be a failure, both in the team's eyes and the fan's. Just need to win one game in Vegas...
Youre right on, I'm thinking landy, grub and jost account for just under 9 mil in raises and Makar gets probably almost 6mil (around Provorov's 6.75mil), which makes it tight and will affect team depth and might mean some of those mid salaries might have to be moved, even to valuable guys like compher and graves, etc...
Their window IS now, but the original poster trumpeting "elite cup contender and on of the best futures in the NHL" is taking a bit too far. If they dont win it this year, they might have to move some futures to stay in the mix next year, etc....
As I said at the start, the 2007-2010 flyers thought they were on to something as well with carter, richards, lupul, upshall, giroux, gagne, hartnell, coburn, carle, parent, etc... all 25 yrs old or less
