Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2021
Published: Jun. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
How can a team be an elite cup contender AND have one of the best futures in the NHL?
Landeskog - Mac - Rantanen (Best in NHL)
Burakovsky - Newhook - Kaut (Tons of upside)

Byram - Makar (Future Norris Winners)
Girard - Timmins (Elite Defensemen)

Like how do you gain all that value (almost entirely) from drafting

And I was just getting confident about the Canadiens...

Ummm, its awful braggy post.

Colorado needs to actually win something first...I think you'll find the 2009 flyers said the same thing.

Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Giroux, JVR, Matt Carle, Braydon Coburn, Ryan Parent, etc.... with Hartnell, Simon Gagne, Carcillo, Ray Emery still young and vets Pronger, Briere, Timonen, etc....

Doesn;t last long.....you need to win something though

Exactly, great shot this year, but in off season, theres expansion and this: Calvert, Saad, Dubynyk, Timmins, Makar, Jost, Dries, Landeskog, Grubaer

Theres four key players (Makar, Jost, Landeskog, Grubaer), there that will be getting huge raises, even if COL doesn;t win the cup.

Calvert has bad concussions and will likely retire, Saad is a UFA, Dubynyk...who cares? Timmins is ineligible. Makar and Jost will be protected. Dries hasn't played at all this year, AHLer. Landy and Grubby will be protected and re-signed.

As for @Club_de_Hockey_le_Canadien, the team and the fans went through immense amounts of pain over the past ten years. Case and point being the 16-17 season. That was like watching a train wreck again and again and again. I seem to recall we lost to the Canadiens 10-1...and then we lost the draft lottery. Though we did end up with the second coming of Jesus in Makar, so we're not complaining. It's been a LONG road though

thats up to the front office being smart and not reckless every TDL moving 1st round picks and top prospects for rentals. If you pay the price you better win.
Sakic and his group are smart, they dont get into that sort of bidding game and rather keep the pipeline cranking out good high end talent on ELCs to fill the gaps as they keep on pushing with this core.

You start spending on futures too much you wont have a future left

The hawks moved 1sts for rentals but also won 3 cups. Avs better win some cups with the strategy you're talking or else Sakic and his crew will look like fools if they're always a piece or two short

I am just saying in general not a hawks specific example.
Hawks cup run is in a different time compared to know especially in a up to 5 year flat cap. You cant go giving away top picks and players on ELCs on rentals every year bc of that.

Oh yeah, I agree with that, its less about the expansion, all those players I listed are UFAs or RFAs. I know that Calvert and Saad are gone, as is probably a depth guy in expansion, but my point was that those four HUGE players are getting massive pay increases, and looking at the other players it becomes apparent that the window will be this season and the next 2. Look at the UFA/RFA in the next 2-3 years above. Its ghoing to take some real work to keep the 4 key pieces this year and have a deep club and still be able to look at 2 and then 3 years time.

My point is that the 4 key guys who are UFA/RFA this year are all underpaid AND the post is irrelevant if they dont win in this window. (Kind of like Philadelphia trumpeting that its one of the most winningest clubs of all time. Thats true, but so is the fact, they haven't won a cup in almost 50 years).

Aside from Makar, I don't know if I agree on the "massive" pay increases. Sure, Landy and Grubauer are going to get raises, but they should be in the $3 million/year range from what they're making now. Makar's going to rake it in no matter what (bridge or long-term). Jost will get a raise, but it's not going to be $4 million, he's probably more in the $2 million x 2-3 year range considering this is his first year of decent production. Definitely going to take work to keep it together, but there's room there. And in two years time, EJ's deal expires and that money goes directly to Mackinnon's raise, so it's definitely possible.

As for relevancy, yeah, they need to make it to the finals this year. Anything less will be a failure, both in the team's eyes and the fan's. Just need to win one game in Vegas...

Youre right on, I'm thinking landy, grub and jost account for just under 9 mil in raises and Makar gets probably almost 6mil (around Provorov's 6.75mil), which makes it tight and will affect team depth and might mean some of those mid salaries might have to be moved, even to valuable guys like compher and graves, etc...

Their window IS now, but the original poster trumpeting "elite cup contender and on of the best futures in the NHL" is taking a bit too far. If they dont win it this year, they might have to move some futures to stay in the mix next year, etc....

As I said at the start, the 2007-2010 flyers thought they were on to something as well with carter, richards, lupul, upshall, giroux, gagne, hartnell, coburn, carle, parent, etc... all 25 yrs old or less
