Move him

Description
I heard the presser too, wouldn't be the first time a GM said we're not moving any core just move a piece of the core. It's very hard to fill this roster with Marner on it it's also next to impossible to win a marner trade (kind of like Buffalo and Eichel) you simply don't win that trade. What do get is flexibility which seems to be a premium in this post Panni league.

A few options, I'm sure the fan bases will have all kinds of negative chatter with how fresh this disappointment is.

Mannnn...selling so low on Marner. From a Non-Leafs fan, the only one that *might* make sense (And I still think you're selling low) is the Ottawa one, because that still likely ends up as a lotto pick, but c'mon. Marner is a top 5 RW in the league...don't listen to the whole "hE wAsN't TrYiNg!!!" narrative. Guy is an excellent player.

No GM will pay full value right now for Marner, no sense in trading him.

If he did get moved, he'd light it up and Leafs nation would look even dumber than they do now.

Best to just keep him and work out the kinks. Regardless of how long/frustrating the process is.

None of these are trades at what the value or return should be , merely a post pointing to organizations that would have and should have significant interest in Marner if the Leafs were to look at creating some flexibility in the flat cap era (none of the trade marner discussion would be happening if the pandemic never happened and the cap hit it's projection of 90 million when marner signed his deal

TOR needs depth with good ELC rookies.

Ottawa does have the assets to make that trade. It would probably be Brown, a 1st and a couple of good prospects.

But if they actually do trade him, I highly doubt it's going to be an inner division trade.

I really like the Jones (with extension) for Marner for both sides.

It's the world we live in. Everyone's in the same boat.

Cap space has always been valuable

The truth is with out moving a contract with double digits leaves the Leafs in a very precarious position of not being able to keep certain players (Hyman, Rielly) and watching them walk to UFA with absolutely nothing to show for it. Long-term cap situation has changed, therefore the game has changed and now the long-term plan should change

It's not the same boat, Leafs have 3 10+ contracts, no team has had any playoff success with 1 player making double digits let alone 3 ( the idea when these were signed was a couple tight years then the cap opens up) pandemic hit and threw a wrench in it all.

Literally with the Habs beating the Leafs is the first time in history a Double digit contract saw beyond the 1st rnd

Oh!! yeah, that's a good point.

They say it's better to have two 5 million dollar players than one 10 Million dollar player. Especially for playoffs.

The leafs have all their eggs in one basket.

Hindsight 20/20, They should have Bridged Marner then signed them to a monster contract.

I'm not saying it won't be difficult, but at the very least they have all the cheap deals coming off the books this year, maybe Kerfoot gets taken in the expansion draft, and I am assuming Andersen isn't coming back. Maybe that is enough, I'm not sure.

Kessel's money does come off the books the same year Reilly needs to get paid. It's not much, but maybe it will help.

It's 1.2 swing that to Rielly and he's at 6.2 which is close but probably a million shy of his open market value
