If the devils draft Luke Hughes

Created by: Erkadurk347
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 4, 2021
Published: Jun. 4, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Devils will have way too many LHD and no RHD. They will also have two left handed dmen who are well below average defensively in L. Hughes and Smith. Hughes is not the pick at 4th OA. Also the devils didn’t trade Murray at the deadline for a reason and that’s because they want veterans on their blue line and they want to resign him. So they are overloaded with LHD men. The pick should be Clarke imo. He could play with a Bahl or someone who is better defensively. Then I hope that the devils pick Corson Ceulmans or Roman Schmidt to have a better defensive RHD man in the system. If you have one solid offensive dman on both the right and the left side, as well as a solid defense dman on the right and left side to compliment the offensive dmen, that would be more ideal. You don’t want to have a lack of defensive skill on your entire left side (in the top 4. Kevin bahl is great defensively). We would get screwed in the playoffs with a weak defensive left side. Also while I’m at it, I don’t think that Holtz will make the team next year. I think that the first, second, and fourth line is pretty set in stone. And I think that the third line will consist of possible free agent signings, and/or it will be up for grabs for any of the guys that I have on the third and “fifth” lines (plus Merkley on that “sixth” line).

Luke Hughes and Ty Smith can play both sides. Hughes played on the right side in USA-18 and Smith played on the right side in WHL. In the one game they played together, Bahl and Ty Smith looked like a perfect match

Future defense
Luke Hughes-Severson
Bahl-Smith
Mukamudullin-Walsh

Thanks for the information, and that looks deadly! Especially if Luke Hughes turns out to be as good as he’s projected to be.

Yea was gonna say both Luke and Ty can play right side. I mean we will have a lack of right handed players but I guess having good players is more important than their handedness. Also Smith is a young rookie, I think his defense will get better with more time, he is a great skater and a smart player, he might never be shutdown, but he can be good enough. Same with Luke, he is young but also big too and going to continue to grow and put on size at Michigan. The future on the defense is very very bright!

Exactly! You don’t have the be right handed to be good on that side. Look at TJ Brodie, and Mackenzie Weeger. They play opposite sides, and they are good at it. It wouldn’t hurt to try if they are comfortable with it. I don’t care what anyone says, if Luke Hughes is available, they are picking him.

I hope we do take him as-well! We need some big time defenders to round out our team with a very good forward foundation. And yea Brodie and Weeger are unreal, especially weeger this year.

I think Luke and Ty will both be decent defensive because of their speed, hands, And hockey IQ (similar to Jack). The future is definetly looking bright on defense smile

Not just on defence, but offence too! The whole team! Bratt, Mercer, Holtz, Hughes, Hischier, Foote, Sharangovich, Kuokkanen etc. And then you have Blackwood in net!

Yea and like I said too, they don't have to be shutdown guys either, just responsible enough to not be liabilities. Shutdown guys like Bahl and Siegenthaler will handle a lot more defensive responsibility.

What's your thoughts on Siegnthaler?

Idon't think he's good enough to make our future top 6. He might be our 7 dman

A couple of things here

1. There are plenty of RHD in this draft. If we take Hughes, we can always grab one in a round or two.

--> our first pick (NJD1st)
Clarke

--> our next pick (NYI 1st)
Mailloux
Bar
Ceulemans
Heimosalmi

--> our next pick (NYI 2nd)
Schmidt

--> our next pick (NJD 3rd)
Ufko
Johnson
Gallagher
Kostenko
Plandowski

--> our next pick (NJD 4th)
Iorio
Masters
Siedem
Pierece

2. We have a few LHD that have experience playing RD. Smith, Bahl, and if we take him, Hughes, who played a lot of RD with Hreschuk this year at USNTDP.

3. In 1995, we won the cup with six LHD. Don't overthink it too much.

Don't forget Siegenthaler either!

Or Vukojevich, McCarthy, Misyul.

Just need 1-2 of these guys to step up into top-4

I don't think they need to step into the top 4. Our top 4 is sorted with Hughes/Clarke, Severson, Smith, Bahl/Mukamudullin. We just need that 6th dman

I don't mind him, I see him as a future bottom pair/penalty killer. He is still young and gets a better opportunity in Jersey compared to Washington. So in short, I don't think extremely highly of him, but he could be an important depth piece.

Smith - Severson/TBD
Hughes - TBD
Bahl/Muk - Walsh/McCarthy
Siegenthaler

Think we need at least one more with the potential that Subban gone in year and Severson could go to UFA in 2 years.
Preferably a RHD that can move the puck up the middle to two left-handed centers......Clarke checks a lot of those boxes for us
But so do guys like Scott Morrow, Brent Johnson, Aleksi Heimosalmi.
Also, until we have seen Bahl/Muk actually play that shut-down role for us and lock down games...it will still be a need in my view.
