Koskinen's buyout is $1.5m this year and next, and Turris buried in the minors is 525k cap for only this year.

I can't see Edmonton moving a 2nd to clear.

Sounds good for the Canucks if we don't just eat Eriksson's last year. Only problem is we'll still end up losing a young forward to Seattle for nothing. I'd rather send Gadjovich + 2nd. to Seattle so they select Eriksson in the ED.

Ok cool. Some other Oiler fans had been sending the 2nd. But fine by me. Neal, Koskinen and Turris buyouts are, what, $4-5m? That’s nothing. As long as Klefbom doesn’t come back, they should be fine.

I hear that. Seattle would certainly take the 1st though. No way they do for a 2nd.

I would think Islanders would jump all over this. But then again time and time again Lou and Barry Trotz have shown they are madly in love with Leo so who knows.

You can have Schultz, I’d just ask for a higher pick than a 6th. He actually had a decent year until the last quarter of the season and the playoffs when he was injured. We just don’t need him due to cap constraints (and I personally do want him gone) but we could hold onto him if we had to.

I’d ask for a 3rd, but would settle for a 4th if that was the highest offer.

Even if Klefbom returns, they have players like Russell who's cap hit goes from $4m to $1.25m (or 125k, if buried in the AHL.)

They buy out Koskinen and Neal, and bury Turris and Russell, and they're looking at going from $15.9m last year to $4.06m next.

I don't think a 2nd is unreasonable to essentially save $2mil on this years cap and $1.5mil on the following year based on current market. Depends if the Oilers think they can put that space to good use. Dumping a first is a non-starter for me but I'd have time to consider dumping 2 contracts for a 2nd if it meant the difference of adding another solid player vs a fringe player.

So EDM gets bounced in round 1 due to lack of depth and you think EDM's solution is to buyout Neal and Koskinen, and with Sekera's buyout, have nearly $5,000,000 in dead cap space for 2 years????? You know how much that could improve the bottom 6?

EDM has to resign/ replace RNH, Barrie, Larsson, Smith, resign Yamamoto and maybe resigning Nurse long term that $15,900,000 will be gone quick too.

RNH and Larsson's contracts are expiring, and in a flat cap world, not going to increase by a great deal.
Replace Barrie with Klefbom (or use Klefbom's LTIR.)
Smith and Yamamoto? Maybe 1.75M for Smith, and Yamamoto did nothing to help himself in his sophomore season.

Also, this doesn't take into consideration adding young players on ELC's like McLeod, Bouchard, Broberg.

For the first time since Chiarelli, Edmonton has cap space.

If you take the salary that is on the books now, add Larrson, RNH and the RFAs at the projected amounts (per Evolving Wild), that gets Oilers to $79.4 million.
That is with Koskinen and Stalock as goalies. Nurse, Larsson, Klefbom, Bear, Russell, Bouchard on defense. Without any buyouts and not counting expansion pick.
That have space...but not a ton to make any major improvements.

In my opinion, the two areas that Edmonton needs to focus on are wingers and goaltending.

There are 31 goalies who played last season who are UFA - timing is good to be picking up a goaltender. For the wingers, they're looking at internal growth (Benson, Marody, Holloway, Lavoie, etc.) and possibly adding a scoring winger. Very doable with the cap they have.
