The Last Dance

Created by: Devil
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs

Description
It looks like the Leafs will take the patient route and keep their core together. I think it's a good idea BUT if the Leafs don't get past the first round this year, Marner or Nylander (whoever doesn't perform in the playoffs) has to go.

It's going to be tough this year, having Tampa, Boston, Florida, and Montreal all in the division

Leafs counter for Sharangovich

WHAT??

Sharangovich is close to untouchable. No chance Devils trade him straight up for a guy that struggled to make the NHL in the past 3 years

Then don’t make a stupid trade for Merkley

Both guys need change of scenery.

When I made the trade from the Devils side, Leafs fans accepted it

Liljegren has lost value. He's no where close to the amount of value Sharangovich has

Like after a 30 point season from a 5th round pick I agree, Liljegren is nothing compared to him

There’s no value at all between Nick Merkley and Liljegren. Give me a freakin break. That is a terrible trade and completely one side to NJD

Leaf fans accepted the deal when I made it multiple times

What has Liljegren done to get his value so high????

For starters he is only 22 and while it seems like he’s been a Top Prospect forever, the facts are that 22 year old defenseman who are among the best players in the AHL tend to eventually become solid NHL players.

Liljegren only played in two games this season, but I thought he looked good in both of them. Keep in mind this is a very small sample size, but playing 25 minutes, across two games, mostly with Travis Dermott, the Leafs attempted 30 shots while allowing just 14 attempts, meaning they controlled play and has puck possession for almost 70% of Liljegren’s shifts.

The Leafs have no one ready at RD other than Liljegren for next year. He is way to valuable to them. And if they were going to trade him he is closer to Bastian and Kuokkanen

No chance Florida falls back to earth. If anything the Leafs will. It is going to be a struggle next year competing against TB, FLA, BOS, and MTL.

It's a bit concerning that he hasn't made the NHL yet. Especially since you said he was good in a small sample size. Leafs have Brodie, Holl and maybe Bogo on the right side so I think he'll have a tough time making the roster.

Devils wouldn't trade a future roster player for a guy who hasn't had a starting role in the NHL. It seems like a risk they shouldn't take

If Lilgeren doesn't make the team next year, Leafs should trade him

I will agree with you on that point, if they block he’s path he should be traded. But god help me if it’s for Nick Merkley.
I would prefer Troy Terry straight up. But if you can package him with another prospect for a quality fwd I would take that also

Why would the Leafs trade their entire 3rd line for nothing?

That is the part that concerns me, from Devils side.
Liljegren was a guy that some had as #1 overall early on in his draft year.
He basically started his D-1 in same position as Dahlin did a year later.
But he fell throughout his draft year, and each year thereafter, the ceiling has gotten lower and lower.
Now he has played 4 years in AHL...at what point does he go from being prospect to depth piece?

He missed some significant playtime during his draft season as he battled mononucleosis and he struggled to find his game. As a result, his draft stock took a hit.

From Lawrence Gilman GM Marlies

“He obviously has good puck skills, he transports the puck very well, he skates very well, he has a good shot… but the greatest impact was how he processed the game. How he thought it. His decision-making.”

Liljegren has been getting more ice time and has an increase in responsibility, as he’s now the Marlies go-to defenseman on the team’s top pairing. And again he is only 22!

Josh Simpson and Kyle Cushman who follow the Marlies closely all talk highly of him.

Will he be in your top 2 probably not but he most definitely will be in your top 4.

And to my point that started this, his value is so much higher than Nick Merkley

Liljegren would not be in the Devils top-4.
Maybe in the future...if he captures a little more on the upside.

But I think for NJD, its a question of whether or not he is a better option than Reilly Walsh.
I'd think we'd stick with the guy who is trending up

Oh ya. I’m good with the Leafs sticking with Liljegren.
