Best way to sneak Kessel back

Created by: SwedishBuries
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 5, 2021
Published: Jun. 5, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Dermott is selected by Seattle. Traded for Phil Kessel after paying Kerfoots signing bonus so Arizona saves 1.85m in actual money in 21-22 even though they retain 50% of Kessels salary and they get a good centre for 2 years which is why they don’t get a sweetener. This gives Toronto a PP and top 6 boost while weakening the bottom 6/PK. PK is an issue with this team but they should start using Matthews/Nylander in a PK role to maximize their potential, hopefully Goodrow and Anderson can help out there as well. Bogo is not retained further weakening PK but Liljegren needs to play or should be traded for a good young forward or really good backup goalie/prospect. Schenn was brought back as RD insurance but shouldn’t take time from Lily. Hyman is retained for 4.5 I think he’ll get less but theres room to give him more if you drop Anderson down or don’t resign Galchenyuk. Reimer is also brought back to tandem with Jack, hes one of the best backups available and will be cheap. No major changes to the core but Kessel changes the top 6 and PP dynamic and provides experience and durability. PK is the biggest weakness but a if a better PK/Defense coach is brought in and some players step up it shouldn’t be worse than currently. Malholtra should also clearly be replaced. Leafs could also look at trading Brooks for a guy like Barbashev from STL who has little cap space

No but he’s still a bottom 6 player off an elite team, I’ve seen suggestions of $1.75m and if you look at Pat Maroon’s contract history, Goodrow is not getting more than that especially with a flat cap

Goodrow gets $2.5M, Arizona can't pay their own players, zero chance they retain salary lol

Your 100% correct, I think the Oilers and about 10 other teams will offer over 2mil for sure.

Teams are crazy if they pay Goodrow 2 or more. It doesn’t make any sense with the flat cap, he’s not playing above 3rd line. Most teams with cap space are still going to have trouble filling their rosters and improving, let alone overpaying grinders. UFAs are going to take paycuts around 20% this summer
