Regular season yes, but I value postseason more. MacKinnon can take the step further when the real games begin. Haven't seen this with McDavid just yet.

If you value playoffs more why is Gaudreau so high?

Because no one behind him impressed that much in the playoffs to be fair.

If anything I should drop Marner with this logic but I didn't.

I think the point he's making is that postseason holds more value but not all of it. McDavid wouldn't even be #2 if the list was only postseason

I take it you also would’ve voted Mario Lemieux for best player in 85-86 then huh.

Pens didn't make the playoffs that year, so of course not.

Love that you put Blackwood on the list

MacKinnon has a good case to be #1 but it has to be McDavid

Jack Hughes snubbed

It's a coin toss between the two.

Blackwood's very solid goalie imo.

Hughes need to slightly improve on the 30 point season high until he reaches this list.

McDavid played fine in the playoffs. Winnipeg was literally playing 5 men back whenever he was on the ice, and that makes it impossible for anyone to score. It’s also why the games were generally low scoring, and the two that weren’t were the ones where McDavid got points . Also with no depth scoring, it makes it way easier to key on McDavid than McKinnon. Seems like you’re just taking team performance into account.

No matter. Jets could shut down McDavid. Blues couldn't do crap with MacKinnon. Yes he gets more help from his teammates than McDavid does, but it doesn't mean he himself isn't a beast.

Haven't yet seen one series where MacKinnon gets shut down. Problem with EDM is that they won't survive even one series to see what McDavid could do - usually against much weaker teams as well. It happened with CHI last year who had virtually no defense whatsoever. McDavid scores on a huge rate, but he also made terrible amount of mistakes that ultimately lead Oilers to lose that series.

And for the record, it was also McDavid's mistake in the Game 4 against Jets that let Kyle Connor score that decisive OT goal.

These small things are something that tip the scale towards MacKinnon in my books. But I'm not inherently saying that thinking McDavid is better is wrong either. I personally just don't think that way.

I dunno about that. Spurgeon is known to be solid defensively, and he also had more points than Dumba this year. I do wonder how exactly Dumba is better, other than having more value due to his age and contract.

Connor has only played 21 playoff games. That’s a drop in the bucket. No GM would trade him for Mackinnon straight up

By the same token there's no chance Sakic would trade MacKinnon for McDavid either, partly because he's two times cheaper than McDavid is.

Ok your defence list is way off. Cale Makar is not in any way a complete defenceman. He’s the best offensive defenceman but he’s not the best overall defenceman on the right.

Hamilton, Pietrangelo, and Ekblad are the most complete RHD in the league

In my opinion there are a couple things I'd consider "out of place." I'll go by position:
LW: I have no problem with your list

C: I'm dubious that Draisaitl is a top 3 or even top 5 center in the league. If you think he really is, then you must think that if he went to go play on a team without the likes of McDavid to play with on the powerplay and sometimes 5v5 that he would still get 100+ points. I think its ridiculous to think he would get more than 85-90. He is an extremely lazy player without the puck on his stick. Same thing with Laine who you do not have top 15 (which I definitely agree with). My top 5 centers would be: McDavid, Mackinnon, Crosby, Matthews, Barkov.

RW: I'm shocked that Tarasenko is so high up there and Ehlers is below him.

LHD: Nurse has had one year in which he was outstanding. Does that one season (only 56 games) warrant him to be above guys like Werenski, and Rielly who have each had multiple very good seasons? And if you are going off just this last year then Chychrun absolutely would be above Nurse. In my opinion he was top 5 in the league. I'm also confounded as to how Pelech is on there but Dahlin or any host of other great young LHD didn't make the cut.

RHD: no real issue with your list although I think Ekblad is better than Heiskanen

G: Sleeping on Markstrom, he has a great track record but definitely had a down year this season. He is a better goalie than Sorokin, Campbell, and Saros imo. Certainly not this last season though but he is an elite goalie. Demko could make the cut too, again depending if you are basing it all or mostly on this last season

Disagree. Imo Makar's about as good as it gets. Best skater there is among all defensemen, have top tier confidence and produces on high level - and he doesn't leak defensively either.

Probably not as complete, but has more potential than any of those and ultimately I can't really say any of them are better than Makar is. The only things he need to improve a bit is physicality and experience. Even as an incomplete package he challenges the names you mentioned.

Imo Draisaitl proved himself last year by winning Hart and Art Ross and taking both of those titles by a clear margin while McDavid was injured. He proved his worth and ability to produce even without help from one of the best players in the world. He helps McDavid the same way McDavid helps him.

I do have some faith in Tarasenko, he was challenging a top5 RW in the league before his unlucky break in terms of injuries. As of now he belongs there with the likes of Ehlers and Teräväinen, you could say the 7-9 positions are complete coin tosses.

Nurse's placement that high is a mistake. I will fix it. Same goes for Chychrun. Both of them were breakthrough D-men this year, but after consideration I think you have a point - they're too high for now. As for Dahlin, well to be fair I wasn't impressed with him at all this year. He took a couple of steps back in his development. The potential is there, but as of right now he does not belong to my list.

You can see in my picks that I value solid stay at home D-men fairly highly. There's one type of D-men that simply don't get enough recognition. And imo Pelech's very solid in this role.

Overall this list is based mostly on last few years, but with this year having a higher multiplier in a sense.

I dunno about that. Spurgeon is known to be solid defensively, and he also had more points than Dumba this year. I do wonder how exactly Dumba is better, other than having more value due to his age and contract.

Spurgeon got prime PP time (when he shouldn't have) that's the only reason he had more points. Dumba had higher ToI, similar PK time, and drew the tougher assignments. Spurgeon's stats for most of the season were garbage. One 9p in 9 game hot streak at the end salvaged his yearly stats. Spurgeon can't play without his blankie (Suter).
