He played well for FLA but imo it's too much.

I mean he's QO was $2,55M and he had one year until UFA so I understood why they wanted to sign him long-term. The money is tough. Tops I would've done is 4 year, $15M in total.

Could end up being an overpayment or a steal

Lol, I was just wondering if a Bennett OS in this range could be something the Leafs look into. Thought maybe the Panthers would be hesitant to pay him that much. Woulda been a high risk move, but if now's not the time for that, when is? Moot point anyways as they would've matched.

Jonas Brodin looks to be a good comparable. Pelech probably deserves the same contract. Defensive metrics are basically equal, Pelech has better offensive metrics while Brodin produces more points and is better on the PK. You could argue Pelech deserves slightly less and I might agree. 5.5-6.5 on 7 years seems fair. I also think it’s worth noting that in the respective contract years by each, Pelech had more than 10% extra defensive zone starts than Brodin did which may contribute to his lack of offence in comparison. Not to mention the defensive style of play the Islanders have.

Brodin totaled 51 points over the last 2 seasons, while Pelech is at only 23 points. Huge difference there. I can't see paying out $6M to a one-dimensional player, regardless of how good he is in his own zone. We're not far apart, but I think $5M AAV is appropriate. But, you're probably right. He'll get over $5M AAV on a long term, deal.

On Bennett—I think it’s too much, because he was a complete non-factor with the Flames (hit people sometimes and that’s it), but he was like, a 110 point guy (20 pts in 15 games) and remained a physical presence with the Panthers lmao, if they think he can stay around a point per game as the 2C with Hubrerdeau and now likely Reinhart on the right side, then this could be a steal. If he regresses then it’s an overpay. Big gamble, definitely high risk high reward, but if it pays off then they have another steal of a contract in their top 6 for the next few years.

Interesting notes :

BEST DRAFT DAYS =
The San Jose Sharks were ranked 1st in the entire 2021 NHL Entry Draft review by TopDownHockey using qualitative and performance statistical rankings/ projections.

This was obviously HEAVILY inflated by the selection of Eklund but grabs like Gaudreau (imo) and Cardwell were beneficial.

Obviously the charts and what not are ranking teams objectively but subjectively it’s hard to argue they didn’t have a clean draft day. Imo I think Columbus had the best draft day (they ranked 4th).

WORST DRAFT DAYS =
Worst draft days according to the models were Vegas and Vancouver. But subjectively that’s gonna be Montreal and Edmonton for me.

I’m guessing NYR, and they’re going to overpay. That’s my prediction.

I doubt the Rangers would overpay for Eichel. Drury doesn't even want to give up Schenider

12th, behind 11th place Tampa - which loved their late draft selections (like Dylan Duke falling miles) (it does not love Hughes compared to other available selections)

What did they use to come to this conclusion? I saw you said they had Tampa 11th. Did they purely analyze what they did with the picks they had? If so that seems like a pretty questionable way to analyze the draft, I’d rather have a solid first four picks in the top 100 than a few major steals in the 5th or later that were projected in the 4th or whatever. Like, there’s gotta be something to be said for coming out with elite talent, even if it was where they were expected to go (i.e. Power at 1).

“I suggest you read the 4-part series where I documented how they are built. But if you haven’t read them and you don’t want to, here’s a high-level overview:
NHL Equivalency (NHLe) assigns different values to points scored in 124 different leagues based on how players who play in multiple leagues in the same season have historically scored.
The Prospect Projection Model is a regression model built using NHLe in addition to age and size to predict the probability that a prospect will become an NHLer and/or an NHL star.” - quote from the article

Looks like there’s a large series article the guy wrote on it (which I don’t care to read lol) (and I think it ranked based on what you picked vs what it would have picked)

17th, behind Seattle at 16th. It didnt LOVE Kidney and Kapanen for the selection number still liked them (I guess it liked other BPA’s) but it was made up for by loving the Roy selection.
