I've found out something pretty interesting about the disadvantage Canadian teams are facing due to tax rates, and more.

Here's a look at American-born UFAs who had played at least 100 career games and signed with a Canadian team via free agency since 2016.

Calgary: Matt Bartkowski, Blake Coleman, Trevor Lewis
Edmonton: Derek Ryan
Montréal: Keith Kinkaid, Al Montoya, Chris Wideman
Ottawa: Alex Galchenyuk, Ron Hainsey, Nate Thompson
Toronto: Zach Bogosian, Ron Hainsey
Vancouver: Tucker Poolman
Winnipeg: Derek Forbort, Matt Hendricks, Trevor Lewis, Paul Stastny, Nate Thompson

Basically, almost all 30+ year-olds with limited options, gross overpayment and prove-me deals.

Darkhorse candidate for a WC spot, but realistically 7th

No question above CBJ, but after that all of the other teams are pretty good. I’m guessing 7th, but they could surprise and maybe make it at 5th.

7th sounds about right

Standing predictions?

I have
1. Islanders
2. Canes
3. Flyers
4. Capitals
5. Penguins
6. Rangers
7. Devils
8. Blue Jackets

Yep, Canadian markets are at a disadvantage, the only way to equal out with the tax rates would be a tax-adjusted cap but NHL won’t do that

Also lol, Wilson is rent free in the Rangers head, big overpayment for Reaves.

Werenski also got a massive extension which is probably a fair deal for him, maybe a bit too much but he’s better than Jones

Well I wouldn't play in Canada if I was American... Not just because of pay etc.

Interesting term here

That's a great contract imo

Low risk, high reward

If he pans out, you get a great player making less than 1M for 3 year

If he doesn't pan out, you can bury him in the AHL

Oh don’t get me wrong! This off-season has been super exciting!

I meant it is horrible in terms of the moves that have been made. They’re not the smartest moves ever….

For sure it's a great contract if BB sticks. I think he's going to have to wait another year since I don't think he's cut out for a bottom 6 role.

With the term I wonder if it is a) something to ward off waiver claims since the last 2 years are 1-way for someone yet to solidify a role in the league and b) gets BB to unrestricted free agency (i.e. something he wanted).

Lmao, no. Legitimately makes me consider trying to get a GM job. Like wtf, who are these people and where did we find them that they are now running a professional sports team

Apparently 4 first rounders equivalent so 4 of...

Zary
Pelletier
Valimaki
2022 1st
2023 1st
Dube
Mangiapane
Maybe Monahan

You pick the 4, obviously some packages are better than others so gonna be some judgement by Treliving

Id probably do Zary Valimaki 2022 1st and Dube. I DO NOT want to trade Mangiapane under any circumstance

Maybe he would be a fringe NHL player this year with his 2-way contract

Next year and the year after he would be a full time NHLer
