Washington 2022

Created by: Theo_nollaf
Team: 2021-22 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 7, 2021
Published: Jun. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Caps definitely could use some changes. The early exits are beginning to pile up and especially if Alex Ovechkin decides to go back to Russia (As I think will happen) the caps will need to make changes. Starting with Evgeny Kusnetsov who already seems to be being pushed out of Washington I think that even though Mika Zibenijad is arguably a better player, he only has a year left and Kusy has 4 years left so I think that especially with the retained salary, the Rangers will be happy to take a player that won't probably ever need a raise with the team. The Oshie cap dump is also interesting but I think that Seattle will have a lot of cap space anyways and they'll be happy to take and third and a bad contract if that contract is a hometown player.

No Ovechkin? Ovechkin alone puts you over the salary cap with at least 2 more players to sign.

Would you rather 4 years of Evgeny Kusnetsov, a proven playoff performer who's had point-per-game seasons at 6 million dollars or Mika Zibanejad, a streaky goal goal scorer, at 5.3 million for one year becuase after that Ziba is going to ask for 9 mil and if the Rangers were to sign that it would be guaranteeing cap hell for as long as the Rangers are good.

These are odd decisions. LuJo is getting a year deal max or getting his rights traded this summer.

I know Oshie is the popular pick to expose and stuff, but BMac gave him a vote of confidence and he had a productive season. It could be worse (those last 2-3 years) but for next season it won’t hurt to have him.

Then there’s the other trades. We would have to give up a lot more to get Mika. Conversely, I think Samsonov is worth more than just Puljujärvi. Not a ton, but more. Hard to replace a future stud goalie (if he behaves himself).

Schwartz is assuming we don’t resign Ovechkin, which is fine to do. But Raffl seems like a waste of space. He looked alright, but not worth having for 3 years.

I doubt the Rangers and the Caps make a deal like this. The last time a trade happened that wasn't for fringe AHL players or draft picks between the two teams was...back in 2004 when the Caps traded Jagr for Anson Carter lol

At least Mika isn’t an outdated worn down veteran like Kuzy is now Mika is a consistent 50-60 point scorer while kuzy is only getting 35 points a season

What? Kuznetsov is 29 lol. Over the last four seasons, he has 259 GP, 76 Gs, 160 A, 236 P. Even this season where he was out for extended periods of time due to COVID, he still had 29 points in 41 games. People are pissed at Kuznetsov for off-ice issues and lack of effort at times, not that he can't produce any more.

True. So why do the Caps retain salary for four years to get a guy they're going to have to overpay or lose the next year?

Because they actually have the space to resign him and If NYR does they're screwed
