Filling a long term hole and piecing together the rest

Created by: Mediumyeet
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 7, 2021
Published: Jun. 7, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IMO the Canucks should focus on one thing this summer that will solve a long term issue. That is either a young RHD or a long term youngish 3C. Solve one of these things and then piece together the rest of the roster without giving up too much or signing big contracts. Also avoiding buyouts.

In this situation they will still need to upgrade the defense next season but Rathbone Zadorov should compliment each other well and ideally Hughes and Fabbro probably play on different pairings but that fills two top 4 spots long term. On forward Foegle fills a long term middle 6 role. Galchenyuk and Dzingel provide some cheap potential offense. Galchenyuk and Zadorov can also help Podkolzin transition easier having some guys that can speak Russian.

Also avoiding buyouts as much as possible is a big deal. In this situation the Canucks have 30+ million to work with next summer. Hopefully they can add a top 6 forward (ideally a C) and one or two top 4 D with that money.

Poile already said that Fabbro is one of his untouchable. Going to take far more then Lind and 2 2nds to acquire Fabbro.

They didn't say he was untouchable unless you know of a quote that I haven't seen. From what I saw they gave a stock answer "he's a real important part of our future" while also saying he is average size and needs to get stronger and faster. He's also been passed on the depth chart by Carrier who play 25mins a night in the playoffs and Fabbro was healthy scratched.

Not saying he's guranteed to get moved or anything but I would be surprised if they're not listening to offers for him this offseason.

I'd take that 100% if I was the Canes. Don't see them getting a much better deal

I've had the conversation with some Hawks fans and a lot of them would consider it. So I don't think it's far off as I've also talked to Canucks fans who don't like it. Helps improve Chicago back end to take some load off Keith who can't keep playing 23+mins a game. Big Z adds some toughness to the nucks back end.

Ya I think Fabbro is going to be available. Figure two 2nds + prospect is a pretty solid offer but not sure.

I would like the toughness (and Russian factor) that Zadorov brings. Schmidt can ease the minutes on Keith.

I think fans would. Coaching staff doesn't trust big Mac though. I love the guy but I expect him to be moved this summer. He won't return mutch but getting a young RHD even if he's a long shot could be a worth while move.

Why would the Hawks take on a ****ty contract AND give up a young stay at home D man with good metrics AND give up a second?

Eh. I think if Bowman wants to keep trying to make the playoffs its a decent trade. I think we should tank the next two years and rebuild so I wouldnt do it but I doubt that's Bowmans plan.

I dont think Schmidt is a ****ty contract. Likely had a down year with the entire Nucks team. He went from being a top pairing guy on Vegas to having a bad year. I would say hes probably in the middle there somewhere. Also, it would be news to me if Z had good metrics. Don't get me wrong, he definitely figured it out a little bit towards the end, but he definitely also regress in that final stretch of losses as well. Similarly, I also think he's going to fall somewhere in the middle there. Schmidt can also help on the powerplay if Boqvist still hasn't figured it out yet. As I've said above, I think the trade only makes sense if you plan on competing the next couple of years, which I don't think is a good idea.

Z had the best GA/60 for all our D man. I don't think we are going to want to give up that 2nd though. Would probably be more inclined to look at this deal for the 3rd in 2022. Not the player I had in mind as we are rebuilding.

Ya I think there could definitely be a debate between what pick is given up in the deal. As a Canuck fan I'd probably still do it for the 2022 3rd instead of 2021 2nd.

As mentioned by someone above, I just think Bowman is going to try to stay competive while rebuilding. If Toews is back they're really not that far off from being in the playoffs again.

Yeah but I doubt Stan would look at Schmidt due to his term and contract. Although he may fill a temporary spot, He isn't the guy we want to build our D around for the next 4 years and we don't want to be stuck in a position in the near future where we have to pay to get rid of his deal.

I don't think Schmidt will be a guy that you have to pay to get rid of by the end of his contract. He will only be 33 by the end of it and should still be a top 4dman by that time. But fair comment. 3yrs left on the deal would probably make people feel more comfortable.

yeah if it were 2-3 years it would be more favourable for our timeline.

That's fine. I just know Pittsburgh is looking for some size and grit. I don't expect much of a return for MacEwan even though I love the guys character. What's the relations though?

There are a lot, Mario's son played with him, they are friends. The coaching staff at AZ.
There are just a lot of connections with him and the Pens. There is no way they trade him. He's a pen till he gets his shot and at least becomes a UFA.
