The past couple of years, John Carlson has been missing some decent chunks of games at a time. He's out right now, and expected to miss a few more games after the All-Star break. So if the Brian Maclellan really thinks this is our last year to win a championship, then he'll sacrifice some of the future to do this now. Shattenkirk plays a very, VERY, similar game to Carlson, and when you watch St. Louis's PP, he has the same role Carlson has. Niskanen doesn't do too well when he operates the 2nd unit, and he does especially bad when he has to operate the top unit. Also, this gives Washington 3 defense pairings that can almost split minutes evenly. That's huge for keeping them all fresh for a deep playoff run.
Adding Tomas Vanek is also a big addition for them, as he would fill out what is probably the best group of forwards in the entire league. The Caps have the ability to roll four lines as it is, and this this just gives them three lines that are absolutely lethal to any defense in the league.
If they weren't already, they are now the most complete team in the league by a long shot. A first line that will produce more than almost any other line in hockey, a second line that produces like a quality first line, a third line that produces like a quality second line, and a fourth line that dominates the possession game. Three defense pairings that can all push the puck, be physical, defend odd-man rushes, and play quality one-on-one defense. One of the best one-two punches in net in the entire NHL. Sounds like a champ to me.
I am well aware that all this won't happen at a single trade deadline. If it were to happen, our prospect pool probably becomes the worst in the NHL. But a Cup is way worth it, as the rest of the Caps fans would agree with me. Washington has the ability to pull it off, and watch out if they do.
What's the deal with djoos and Sanford? Those 5th rounders are marginal so the prospects would have to be worth it by themselves. Honestly asking here not trying to troll. Why does Sanford only have 1 point in 20 something games this year? Where does Djoos fit in for your AHL team? Where does he project? If the prospects are solid I'd do that trade; I'm just not familiar with either of them.

Sanford and Djoos would be severe overpayment for Vanek. Sanford is a possible top 6 player, Djoos will be a good bottom pairing dman. I like Vanek but I wouldn't do that move from WSH side.

I'm as big a Caps fan as anyone, but I wouldn't say Sanford is going to be a top-6 winger. I think Vrana will, but Sanford will most likely max out as a 3rd line guy on a decent team.

Djoos isn't too much to write home about, his most likely path to the NHL is being one of those defenseman that gets called up to play a game or two in case of injury, but nobody that will become a mainstay on the backend. The only reason for Sanford not playing well is because he made the jump from playing at BC straight to the NHL, no AHL experience first. We sent him down and he's been playing pretty well down in Hershey.
I appreciate the fact that you asked about the prospects instead of flipping out about how bad the trade is, just because you hadn't heard of them before. It's a nice change to most people on here.
No problem Krakowitz. I know what you mean. Lots of impulse keyboard warriors online these days. With your feedback I would guess the wings pass on that trade then. We have plenty of B-/C+ prospects (which is what it's sounding like you're saying these two guys are).
If we deal Vanek I feel like the asking price should be a B+/A- prospect or a couple better picks ( like a second and a third or something along those lines). I know he's a rental but he's a PPG guy this year and if the wings retain he is SUPER cheap (which increases number of potential buyers).
I like the moves, but don't think Detroit or St. Louis would take those. Stephenson, Sanford, and Djoos are all mid-level prospects. Might have to put in better prospects or picks.
