Jones hasnt been worth 8 mil in like 2 or 3 years. This year he wasnt even worth his current cap hit.
So a guy who seems to be getting worse every year, a forwars who is also getting worse every year and just had surgery that will keep him out till december, a goalie who is an ok 1b on his best day and a first in the 20s in a bad draft.

Jones has already said he's testing free agency next summer so he's not signing an extension as part of the deal. Also Marner is worth more than that. Jones is just the right handed version of Rielly and thee team doesn't need that. On top of that, Domi is out till December after shoulder surgery and Korpisalo isn't that good of a goalie - they can find a better one for cheaper. Justin Holl and Seth Jones are very similar defenceman but Jones just has the higher skill. Both are offensive but not great defensively - in fact I'd argue Holl is better defensively. The "upgrade" between Holl and Jones is no where close to the value of Marner. - Leafs decline.

Rielly at $8M per season isn't happening. He won't be over $7M at all, likely around $6.5M

This fanbase is way too obsessed with Jones. He has put up worse offensive numbers than Rielly over their careers and his defensive impact this year was bottom ten in the league
