LA looking for two Top 6 forwards

Created by: GM_MZ_WSH
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2021
Published: Jun. 8, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
From Darren Dreger:

With expansion draft looming, there’s more trade discussion developing around the NHL. The LA Kings could be a big player this offseason. The Kings are hoping to acquire two top 6 forwards through trade or free agency.

It just so happens Washington has 1 top 6 center. Kind of a pipe dream.
Trades
WSH
  1. Thomas, Akil
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (STL)
  3. 2022 4th round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Washington gets a young center they passed on for Kody Clark. Would be stacked with young guys in the Center position, making some expendable or see if some can move to either wing. It would be good have some two-way forwards like a mini Mark Stone. Need to get younger and if they can get guys who will be ready in 1-2 years, all the better to avoid a full rebuild
LAK
  1. Kuznetsov, Evgeny
Additional Details:
also willing to retain cap, probably around $1.3 to $1.8mil

Talk about selling low...especially with salary retention. Caps aren't gonna retain any salary on a 4 year deal, let's be real.

Eller is not a long term option at 2C. He's good in a pinch, but that's not going to be a center corps that gets you out of the first round, maybe even the playoffs.

in no way does this help Washington now or in the future. Kuzy easily gets a you more than this with out retaining salary. AJF is a solid 2 way player....

Thomas is a 5'10 21 year old that has average AHL numbers.... i would burn my jersey s if this was what we got back for a 65-70 point center that lead us to a cup. Capitals should keep him and try to win a cup. Thomas isnt better than Protas Lappy Mcmichael .... so he would be forced to play wing and if we are looking to the future a guy thats 21 now isnt really the player we are searching for

Oh this isn’t the whole team, just looking and focusing on that one trade. I agree with what you’re saying, and I don’t want that to be the only move, I want the Capitals to be active. Again, this was just one trade in particular I was looking at.

But to the one trade itself, is it selling low? Yes, probably and I can make those changes like the retention.

It’s not necessarily a win now trade. Like I said in a response above, this isn’t the only move I want to make, but just focusing on this one specifically.

AJF is no better than Thomas. He’s fast, sure, but 2 years older, Thomas put up more points in a rookie AHL season than AJF ever has had across three seasons in the AHL.

You do bring up a good point about the C depth. McMichael, Lapierre, and even Protas really set up our future down the middle exactly as 1-2-3 (that’s how high I am on all 3 of those guys). So, I’ll look to run it back with another prospect.

the way i look at it is you gotta start looking at Kuzy as a high end asset. If you move him it leaves a massive hole in the lineup

Agreed, I usually try to get high or respectable value, this was the first I really kinda sold low on Kuznetsov. Depending on where you look, people either say how great it is and expect two 1sts or think he’s a bag of rocks and get like one 2nd If we do move on from him, we do need a replacement. Questions becomes who and where/how? LA just signed Iafallo, so probably off the table. I would be down for getting Danault in free agency if we can’t get a 2C in a trade

I would just keep him and play him w Sprong and Mantha. Trade Eller for a 2nd and play Mcmichael w Oshie and Sheary
