How I would handle the Caps

Description
First off- Here is how I think the Caps will handle the expansion draft:

(7F/3D/1G)

Protected Forwards-
Backstrom
Mantha
Ovechkin
Oshie (Mac said he’ll try to protect him)
Wilson
Eller
Kuznetsov (protected to ensure they can trade him for assets)

Protected D-
Carlson
Orlov
Schultz (play RD, Caps have lots of LD prospects that can play instead of Dillion)

Protected G-
Samsonov

Don’t read too much into who I am trading with and some of the players, it’s just a rough estimate of what I think would work.

Darren Dreger (Twitter 6/8/2021): "With the expansion draft looming, there's more trade discussion developing around the NHL. The LA Kings could be a big player this offseason. The Kings are hoping to acquire two top 6 forwards through trade or free agency".

That's where I got this idea from. It could be Thomas too, this is just a bit of a placement. It may not even be the Kings, this is just roughly what I think the Caps should get for Kuzy

Kings will likely roll with Kopitar-Vilardi-Byfield-JAD up the middle and will have Turcotte knocking pretty hard for a look. I think Blake is going to prioritize scoring wingers who can play a 200-foot game. They haven't had much luck with Vilardi up the wing, but the main issue is the Kings would be paying $18M on centers for the next few years, before paying Byfield, Turcotte, Vilardi, or JAD. So no way they do that.

You keep Shultz instead of Dillon because he plays RD and not LD..

Only to move him to LD?????

So Washington trades a 1-2c that can score 65-70 points for a kid that only maybe replaces Dowd on the 4th line.... THEN Washington only gets to move up like 30 spots in the draft but in the 3rd round ? HOW does this at all help them... this gets a GM fired. Vilardi is a solid players but im putting my stock behind Mcmichael and Lappy over him plus Protas .... Capitals are set for the next 10 years at center. No need to sell Kuzy for pennies on the Dollar, Maybe if LA gives Washington Björnfot or Kaliyev + a high pick they could consider moving Kuzy

If you think that Seattle is taking Brenden Dillon instead of Vitek Vanecek, you're being optimistic.

We don't need to exchange one center for another, even one as accomplished as Evgeny Kuznetsov. We'll keep the younger guy with the much smaller cap hit. We might want to make a deal for Jack Eichel at the trade deadline or whenever Buffalo is officially eliminated from the playoffs, whichever comes first.

I second the center depth, and while Vilardi is a real good prospect, Capitals would probably need wingers or RD. For a pick though, I mean LA doesn’t have multiple picks. So we’d have to settle most likely with a 2nd rounder at the highest of paired with a pretty good prospect. If this was CBJ we could get either Toronto or Tampa pick and I’d be fine with that
