The Blues are not doing that, and they're not the only team who balks here.

None of these trades and signings are "successful" quite honestly.

Not that excited about the CBJ deal. I think Jones can and will return more.

This is not a rebuild. This is a "blow it up".
In a rebuild, you get good young players, prospects or picks.
In a blow-it-up, you get rid of existing roster before a rebuild.

Here, we are trading eight (8) young players that are already in NHL.

    Kuokkanen
    Bastian
    Boqvist
    Maltsev
    Merkley
    Thompson
    Bahl
    Siegenthaler

In return, we get seven (7) players that are either worse, overpaid, or pending free agents (exception may be Dunn).

    Dunn
    Jones
    Neal
    Kassian
    Ericsson
    Ferland
    Holtby
    ...and net +1 pick

Devils are not blowing it up. Their rebuild is going along well.

(and the EDM and VAN deals are especially bad for NJD)

They’ll be lucky to get a 2nd round pick since he wants out anyways. I gave up a first to insure getting him, He can stay with New Jersey long term and speed up the rebuild

this is abusing the cap while taking in a ton of high draft picks and slowly speeding up the rebuild.. 1 sign Seth Jones long term and potentially Vince dunn aswel, both defencemen are relatively young and better than what New Jersey’s got right now., 2 all the cap relief players traded for have 1 year left on their deals besides Kassian. 3 , 6 draft picks in the first 2 rounds this year. I didn’t give up any young star talent, just players that’ll push deals through

You are saying that we would be "lucky" to get, for a legit NHL star, MUCH less than we got TWICE for depth deadline rentals.

There's no "wait and see". You're just wrong.

Well, giving up guys like Bahl, Kuokkanen, Boqvist would be unlikely unless better players are coming back. Also, Siegenthaler and Bastian are guys we expect to have roles here.

Boy you’re gonna get a rude awakening, Jones is not an “NHL star” for one and he doesn’t want to play in Columbus, they’re gonna take whatever they can get for him because he’s leaving anyway…. “Depth deadline rental” look at what Buffalo got for Taylor Hall. If you’re a jackets fan I hope you’re not expecting a haul for Jones because you’ll be beyond disappointed

I was going more towards the full rebuild stage instead of half a$$ing and grabbing picks while giving young guns a chance to play this year. If you think the devils are gonna be competitive keeping guys like bastian and kuokenen on the roster then yikes. I’m looking for youth not 23+ year olds. Similar to Ottawa

Kuokkanen is good. Can play anywhere in line-up. And had a solid year.
Bastian is a physical 4th liner, well-liked by teammates.

Every good team has role players.
    They are not the core.
Our core is Hughes, Hischier, Bratt, Sharangovich, Zacha, Smith, Severson, Blackwood.

    Add to that core...
    A tone-setting 4th line (Wood, McLeod, Bastian)
Scoring prospects (Holtz, Foote, Mercer, Clarke, Gritsyuk, Thompson)
Defensive dman prospects (Bahl, Mukhamadullin, Okhotyuk)
    Offensive dman prospects (Edwards, Walsh)
    Goalie prospects (Schmid, Daws)
Some quality role players (Kuokkanen, Siegenthaler, Boqvist)

...and you have most of the foundation that is needed.

Only other pieces we need - other than time to develop - are....
    1. Another top-4 dman or two. Hopefully we get one in 2021 draft and another one of these prospects steps up.
    2. A 3rd line RHC/RW until Mercer arrives
    3. A back-up goalie until Daws, Schmid arrive.

Very good way of putting it, if there’s a way to keep that core and make a push for Jones or Dunn I’m sure the devils jump on board. It’s still not eye catching tho, they need a couple more stars before we think about playoffs

Maybe need another star goal-scorer or shutdown d-man or other role guys. But most of our needs will hopefully be met with our own pipeline. Can fill in the gaps year-to-year.

Seriously? Can you provide a source that says he wants out? Savard just went for a first & third so why would he only be a second?

It's a roundabout form of the usual trade negging. He wants a good player at knockoff prices, so he comes up with a truly absurd base valuation and then tries to position it as "but I'm paying more because of my generous nature and a desire to make sure we get him". Then he'll swear up and down that the player in question actually sucks and is terrible to justify that base valuation, but what he is is somehow "still worth it" to his team, and if - if, you see - he just happens to be a bit better than expected after the trade goes down, well, then, that's just his team's good fortune, right?
