For me, the argument about Glendenning vs Engvall is moot, Engvall isnt working out here and needs a change of scenery.
Kerfoot is getting taken by the Kraken if we dont trade him, that loses leverage for your return, maybe it could be a 2nd rounder from the canucks, but they could just say "ok, we'll wait for seattle to take him and make a deal with them instead".
Driedger is not a lateral move from Andersen, he's an upgrade. Andersen is 31, and had an 0.895 in 24 games. Driedger is 27 with a 0.927 in 23 games. Clear upgrade and a lower cost.
I think we can agree that the defense was not the issue this playoffs, it was depth scoring. With our current cap situation, its not going to be possible to address both.
Overall, is it a huge improvment? No, but thats just not possible with the flat cap. I think this addresses some of our weakness without sacrificing any prospects.
I think what's overlooked about Engvall is that when he's good, he's a really good checker. He's the main guy that shut McDavid down in the 3 game set in Edmonton and that's obviously not easy to do. He's just not consistent at all. When you can bury him for almost literally nothing, I think you keep that as a depth piece if you can. Glendening is only good for killing penalties and if you're only gonna use him there then he's not really worth bringing in. Again, a lateral move but it's a minor one. No biggy.
I think Kerfoot is likely gone before the draft. After his great playoffs, there's gonna be playoff teams that look at him as a strong option for depth and will bring the price back up to neutralize the expansion draft situation. I've suggested Kerfoot to Vegas for William Carrier and the 34th overall pick in the draft, which actually got good feedback from Vegas fans. It may be a little high, but even Carrier and a 3rd is a good price for Kerfoot.
Andersen to Driedger is a lateral move. You mention the regular season stats but don't mention that Andersen played injured all season long. And like Andersen, once Driedger played in playoffs he went down to a .871sv% when it really matter. At least Andersen as put up back to back playoffs of at least .922sv%. & Driedger is so unproven as a starter that it's really a lateral move at best. There's not telling how he holds up over a season getting more consistent starts.
I also don't agree that depth scoring was Toronto's issue - to me it was clearly the star power not scoring. Spezza scored. Kerfoot scored. Nylander scored. Hell even Joe Thornton had as many goals as Matthews and had more than Marner. That's the issue - the stars need to get it done. The depth was a strong part of the team all season.
