So you pay Seattle not to take Copp but then don’t resign him?

Copp doesn't seem like he wants to play in Winnipeg long-term without big money, which we need to currently spend on defense. Seattle likely wouldn't take him unless they had confirmation he would re-sign. The protection is from them taking Stanley or Appleton, a 1st doesn't mean much in this draft year. That's just my view of things.

He is definitely worth more than a 6th, but his current value has been lowered from minimal play over the last year. He isn't going to get playtime with the current coaching and upcoming prospects in our organization, I'd rather us take a little bit of a loss on him if it means his cap is cleared and he gets playtime somewhere else.

Detroit is full on the righ side of D with 4 players penned in for next year.
On the left side Niku is a bad fit as what Detroit needs is one or two reliable veterans to tie them over until their prospects are ready.
Detroit already have 4 newly signed good prospects + two more still unsigned on LD.
There will be at least 2 LD offered on cap dump deals that will bring a better player + assests without having to pay anything.

Those are the reasons Detroit will not accept the offer.

This is kind of like the Kevin Hayes senerio where the flyers were bound to overpay for him
