Trying a Marner to Carolina deal

Description
Marner is a fantastic player, but he earns FAR more than he should. About 2.5-3 million extra is a lot of money. He's a great player at 8milllion, he's a tough contract to swallow at 11... this is more for fun, trying to balance the books in Carolina with Marner and to prove that you will not get TERAVAINEN OR NECAS for him...

Additional Details:
This might seem underwhelming, but let me explain my logic here.

Carolina are taking on all of the Marner deal, with no retention. They are not sending back any cap, they are helping the leafs with their cap issues.

Let's face it, the reason that Fans will want to move on from Marner is that he is not worth his contract. While I'm not sure what an ideal package for Toronto looks like, the principal aim will be to move out money

the leafs wont be trading marner if they cannot get at least one piece to help them now out of it. Unless the futures package is insane that is, but this is not

Come on, the Leaf fans on here trading Marner are trying to find cap space because no one (Brandon Pridham/Dubas) could have envisioned a pandemic creating a flat cap. They did see the future TV deal coming and the cap being closer to 88-90 million.

I think what’s fair is having 40 mil tied to 4FWDs has failed.

Leafs will not be moving Marner, especially not for this. Bad fit

Counter point-Marner is absolutely worth the contract and people that are saying that he isn't are looking solely at the teams lack of success in their last 3 games of that series.

How does this hypothetical prove the other hypotheticals with Necas/Teravainen wrong?

Is he really not worth the money? Because Evolving-Hockey's contract projections have him at a $11.5M cap hit over seven years if he were to sign with another team as a UFA today.

Marner earns 1 mill more than he should lul

people forget the year of his contract he had 94 points. And had 2 offer sheets above 10mill waiting for him in both New York and Columbus.

In a full season with Matthews he would easily achieve 100 points.

Like to me his contract should have been 9.3mill x 6 but considering 2 teams offered him upwards of 13mill what could Dubas do lul.

Personally I don't see an extra 2.5 or 3 mil of overpay as "a lot of money", speaking from the perspective of roster management. Plenty of teams carry around a replacement level player on the roster that makes that much. So you move that guy, pretend you didn't, play a replacement player for under 1m, and call Marner's 11m AAV a combo of 8m + the 3m you saved.

If Svechnikov strong-arms CAR for a 10m x 8 yr deal and then has a bad season/playoffs, would you take a couple prospects and the 27th overall pick for him in the next offseason to get help with cap issues? I think the Marner trades are less about money/overpayment and more about short-term frustration.

Take the 4 1st round picks and flip them is certainly an option. I think everyone agrees that at 8.5-9mil Marner’s an elite player. A guy worth several 1sts (5? something like that) or equivalent at that price, for sure. That puts him a bit below guys like Rantanen and Stone, which is where he should be. So what’s the value of retaining 2-2.5mil for 4 years? That’s what brings his trade value down. I also think the narrative that he’s worth it for his points is stupid. You pay for goals, because those are hard to get and the most important thing. Elite playmakers are great but they’re not in the same tier as elite snipers, and should get paid less as a result. That’s why the Matthews deal is fine and nobody likes the Marner deal.

Mitch Marner is a 95+ point winger who plays excellent defence. Is he overpaid by like 2 million? Yes. But any trade where you aren't getting a superstar or a very high end prospect in return would be the worst trade this franchise has ever made. WHich is saying something considering there have been a lot of bad ones
