Once More Unto The Breach

Created by: HabsRafiki
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2021
Published: Jun. 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This scenario assumes Drouin's ailment is explained and there is confidence that he has put it behind him. If not, he is placed on LTIR and Habs add another high-level winger via trade or UFA.

Kraken received incentives to take Byron in the expansion draft in the form of Jordan Harris and a 4th-round pick.

Montreal got great service from Eric Staal and I'd have no qualms about re-signing him. That said, I've always thought Jeff Carter should have been a Canadiens player and have never got over the STUPID decision to draft Andrei Kostitshyn. Better late than never. Josh Brook remains a solid RD prospect (THN Future Watch #6 for Habs) who could easily step in for Ceci or Friedman. If Brook doesn't make the cut, Pens get a #2 pick in 2022.

Don't give them away or no, they're not wanted?

The Habs would still have Guhle, Norlinder, Struble and Fairbrother as excellent defensive prospects. Harris has played 3 years at Northeastern and refused to sign with the Habs this spring. That means that after next season, he will be a UFA and the Habs will get no value for him. My suspicion is that, as an American, he is not interested in signing in Canada. I think any defenceman would be excited to go to Seattle, where he will have a chance to play almost immediately.

Brook is a very good prospect, but Habs have no place on the roster for him. Weber and Petry are still there on the RHD, and Brook would have to clear waivers next year to be sent down. Having watched Juulsen taken with no compensation, I would rather use Brook to secure a solid veteran centremen than risk losing him for nothing.

don't mind the penguins trade at all. Don't see why a young team like MTL would do it though

By using Harris to get Seattle to take Byron, the Habs will have enough cash to re-sign Danault, KK, Armia and Lehkonen. They also won't lose Jake Allen or a defenceman like Chiarot. So, yes, you're trading Harris to free up cap AND making sure you keep the players you most want to keep.

In the case of Brook, I think trading him to get Jeff Carter is a net positive, albeit a short-term one. But if we accept the idea that the current Price-Weber window is worth pursuing, adding a good veteran player like Carter is a good use of an asset that the Habs are otherwise likely to lose to waivers.

Watching how Staal has come to life in the playoffs, it's a valuable lesson that experience and size are huge advantages in the playoffs. Carter had two Stanley Cups with the Kings and, this year, he had 4 goals and an assist in 6 games for the Pens. He is a warrior. At less than $2M, and splitting time with Evans and Poehling, he will be rested and teaching the young centres how to survive in the league. I think KK has learned a ton by watching Staal. I think with good load management, Carter could be very valuable for the next year or two.

it's not about Carter, it's more that MTL as a team building for the future. The road now is hard. But in 2 years, it will be much easier. Teams like PIT BOS and WSH in the east in 2 years will be going nowhere.
TB will be going backwards due to cap. And TOR is going nowhere fast. There isn't much there. You are looking at young teams like CAR, OTT, and MTL being the new regulars very shortly. Hell they are all either already there or on the cusp. It's not time to trade young assets away for a 1 year rental. Not when you know the hurdles are still other teams and not you.
But MTL will have it's day when they are the hurdle everyone is looking at, as long as they trust the plan

Montreal has a few impressive young players (Suzuki, KK, Caufield, Romanov, Evans) but the meat of this team is OLD. Price, Weber, Petry, Gallagher, Toffoli, Chiarot, Edmondson, Anderson.... These guys are all in their primes or beyond. The time to build a team to compete is right now!!

well I'll guess we'll see how close they are shortly, they get their first matchup out side the weak north.
