I would think so.
But I don't think reality has set in with some fans.
Avs are losing a d-man one way or another.

I just haven't see a realistic scenario where Makar, Girard, Toews, Graves, Johnson all return...if they are not doing 3-5-1 protection and they are not doing expansion trades.

True last expansion draft they were lucky that they were such an abysmal team but this year is different

Toews is being protected and there are tons of Dmen available so im assuming they take the best available forward from most teams, hence Compher over Graves who had a down year after his only good one which looks suspect

They should be just fine going 7-3-1

If the 3 are Johnson (NMC), Makar, Girard, that leaves Toews and Graves unprotected.

I think the vast VAST majority of Avs fan expect to lose Graves in the XD.

Ranta needs to play in the AHL and the Avs have Kaut and Bowers who are closer, I was truly puzzled by the decision to play Ranta in the playoffs. I think Saad is more than a passing priority I think they would move Compher AND Donskoi if they had to to bring him back.

Johnson will most likely waive considering no one is touching his contract

Yes, no doubt.
But some of the vocal ones still think Seattle will think SEA takes Compher, while Avs keep the defense they have now.
Realistic options, from most likely to least likely...

1. EJ bought out, SEA takes Graves
2. Avs work trade so SEA takes Graves over Toews
3. SEA takes Toews
4. SEA takes Compher over Toews or Graves

Either way, Avs are likely to lose a d-man

This is not it works.
He has to amend his contract to eliminate the no movement clause before exemption lists are set, which are done before protection lists are set.

Here is a glimpse of the timeline

Jul 12: Deadline for teams to ask players to waive NMC
Jul 16: Deadline for players to waive NMC
Jul 17: Teams protection lists submitted to league
Jul 17-21: Roster freeze in effect (no moves, no trades)
Jul 18: Protection lists made public

Last time around, many players were asked to waive. Pretty much all of them declined.
MAF waived knowing he would be selected. And Toby Enstrom was the lone "do it for the team" guy.

I mean this is entirely my opinion but Saad IS what they HOPED Compher would become. Saad was arguably one of the 3 best forwards for the Avs in the playoffs. His versatility, grit, and talent allowed Bednar to blender lines once Kadri was suspended. He was great not just with MacKinnon and Rantanen, but he was really good with Jost and Nichushkin too. Don’t get me wrong Donskoi when he is hot is incredible, but when he is not he is definitely not. Compher gets killed on here, but even having the worst year of his career he had what would be a 30pt full season but he like Donskoi is not a play driver. Saad just brings a higher consistent skill level than those 2. It will be interesting to see what they do.

There is zero chance Toews gets exposed. From a logical point of view why wouldn’t EJ waive? Seattle isn’t going to take him, he’s played 4 games in the last calendar year, makes $6M and is 33 yrs old. What some Avs don’t want to acknowledge is that a buy out of EJ is potentially problematic because that’s dead money for 4 years which in that time frame they have to re-sign MacKinnon, Byram, Newhook, and even potentially Makar. That’s why I think Graves is the pick. He’s young, has term on his reasonable contract and can play in the top 4. I suppose it is possible Seattle would take Compher or Donskoi depending on who is available I just don’t think so.

Why would he leave millions of dollars on the table? To see teammate X taken over teammate Y? This is their livelihood. They are not fans. Would make zero sense.
