First off. Hamilton, is a great defenseman, and he is great offensively. The contract I gave him, may be underwhelming money wise, but the guy is from Toronto, so maybe he is willing to take 1 mil or so less, to come home. And term wise, I gave him 6 years, meaning his contract will expire when he's 33 34 range. I wouldn't be willing to give him 7, unless the money comes down. So, with that being said, I will be giving pros and cons about this signing.
To start, Pros.
Pros:
1. Extremely good player/ defenseman
2. Really solidifies your top 4 for the future
3. Powerplay guy.
4. Assuming he plays with Muzzin, that's a top pair in the NHL.
5. Most teams that makes it far in the playoffs, has that one stud d, Hamilton is that.
6. Doesn't rush Sandin or Liljegren, however may hurt them later (we are getting to that on cons)
7. Overall, makes this team better.
Now onto Cons:
1. May effect Sandin and Liljegren in the future. IMO, this doesn't effect Sandin too much, they play different sides, plus if you are worried about the Powerplay time, you can always play two d on the same Power Play. However this move DOES effect Liljegren, however I don't think its the end of the world.
2. May be a pain in the ass in the Future.
3. If all hell breaks lose, could put them in hand cuffs.
So, what are your thoughts on Signing Hamilton. Also need to mention Reilly would be gone if this happens. Could be a pro or a con, varying on your opinion.
Now I will go in depth on the other signings, but I will keep it short.
1. Wennberg. I really like Wennberg. I think he's a useful player, and I'm ok with 3.5 mil. Thoughts?
2. Armia. This IMO would be a really nice add. I like him a ton. Thoughts?
3. Oleksiak, I like this move, hes 6 foot 7, and is a Toronto boy. Unfortunately, I got tied up in some cap issues, so both Oleksiak and Bogosian are a little underpaid, but this is not 100% serious, just for a rough sketch, you can always play around with the cap later.
Now onto the Trades.
Please keep in mind, that these trades are for example purposes, the team these players go to, and the return are rough sketches.
To start,
1. Trading Reilly. Like I said, this is a rough sketch. I would like getting players back in return for Reilly, but if you sign Hamilton, that would be hard. So like I said a rough sketch here.
2. Holl to Philly. Like I said, this is also a rough sketch. Do you think a second round pick would be fair for Holl? Let me know! Cap move however.
3. Acquiring Vanecek. Vanecek, is a solid backup, on a cheap contract. Makes sense IMO.
I would also like to mention, I have Seattle taking Kerfoot here, as the leafs go seven and three, making the Hamilton signing after the expansion draft.
Alright, so what are your thoughts? Please let me know down below what your thoughts are on this what I hope to be entertaining armchair gm.
Carolina is the first place Dougie hasn't regularly been booed by the home crowd why does he take less for less term in Toronto nah more and more or he stays in Carolina."Going home" isn't always a good idea. See Drouin
-well below average in his own zone
-easy to play against to the point where Bostom constantly dumped the puck in his corner in the 2019 and 2020 playoffs and they won pretty often
-gonna get a massive deal because oFfEnSe
=
TOR shouldn't get him
if you can get one of the best two way defenders in the league, you do it and worry about the rest later. Things like worrying about powerplay time for prospects who havent stapled themselves to pp1 or whatever isnt an issue, these guys probably arnt cale makar (and if they are, you have a real fun problem anyway),
You take Hamilton for term for Futures you get from one year of Rielly every time
My favorite thing about this post is how much time and effort when into typing up the description, only to talk ZERO downside regarding Dougie himself and his limitations on the ice. The only ‘downside’ here was how it effects young defenseman.
I like the concept of Dougie Hamilton, and he is in a perfect spot in Carolina…small market, perfect defensive partner in Slavin and a system which lets him roam and be himself. He is NOT a ‘stud’ defenseman in the playoffs.
If he is smart, he’d take a below market deal and stay in Carolina. If he chases the cash, which I think he will, some team will be disappointed with the contract value.

didnt dougie want Pitrangelo money so like what happened last year I cant see us affording him even if we move Rielly.

I like Hamilton but he reminds me alot of Holl for the following
when paired with Slavin he is incredible and puts up amazing numbers at both ends thanks to Slavin taking on more responsibilities in the Dzone. Put put him with anyone else and his flaws especially defensively begin to show. Holl is the same with Muzzin great away from Muzzin not a top 4 Dman.
So if Hamilton did come he would for sure go with Muzzin but then that causes a problem as your 2nd pair would be Brodie-Holl and that pairing had its struggles when it was used.
honestly if Im dubas I would look at someone who can play both sides LD/RD, Play top 4, and contribute at both ends
Goligoski to me is the guy to try and get in FA. Should not be to expensive, can make our Dcore better, and we dont gotta move Rielly

not really, i mean they put up better numbers together than apart, but Hamilton consistently puts up great defensive numbers no matter who he plays with, in fact last 2 seasons before this one he put up better numbers without Slavin than with him.
Hamilton is definitely an elite add in both zones and woudnt need muzzin.
I also have zero interest in goligoski unless he wants to sign a bogo deal, he hasnt been above meh in his own end in years
This is the fallacy of not watching the games and only looking at analytics. If you watched the playoffs games for the Canes in the last 3 seasons you would see how good teams expose him easily on the defensive end.
Drool over his regular season analytics and him his as much as you want. You’ll still exist the playoffs too early.

no, this is a fallacy of thinking people dont watch the games while they also look at the stats.. I watch lots of canes games because they have a lot of really fun players. One of the players i love to watch most (probably right after svech) is Hamilton.
And what you're saying simply isnt true from either the statistical standpoint or what ive seen while watching the games. If the leafs added him they'd get a huge boost and it would leave a massive hole in the canes defence they wouldnt be able to fill
