If Makar and Landeskog get term and market rate

Created by: lrw2105
Team: 2021-22 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 12, 2021
Published: Jun. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Contract values are rounded from Evolving-Hockey. Roster assumes that EJ has waived for expansion draft but is not on LTIR, and that Seattle takes Jacob McDonald (cheap, good numbers, defense).

Donskoi is traded over Compher under the assumption that JD may have more external value. The Hjalmarsson signing is based on hearing that COL was interested in him last season, but that he did not want to leave AZ. From COL's perspective he could be EJ injury insurance and/or a safety net for Byram or Timmins.

The purpose of this roster is to show that if SEA doesn't take a player with ~3mill cap, and CM and GL sign for significant $ + term, Grubauer and Saad are priced out, but COL can use Graves to procure a goalie (or assets for a goalie) and would need to clear only one ~3mill salary to stay under the cap.

I mean it is realistic. The Avs are going to have a number for Grubauer and it isn’t to hard to imagine a scenario where he ends up somewhere else imo. If this was what really happened I’d do everything in my power to trade Compher and bring back Saad.

We're not trading Merzlikins unless we get something truly special back, so trying to discount requested prices isn't going to work.

Jackets are definitely higher on Elvis than Korpi as far as talent. They will probably sell Korpi to the highest bidder and line up a servicable backup.

Do people in Lumbus organization/fans actually think korpisalo is good?

Like I know he had one hot playoff run and a good rookie season. But otherwise he's been essentially garbage.

He has the second lowest save percentage since entering the league on 2015 (for a goalie with min 150 GP)

That Landy deal will age sooooo badly. Like I think you have to sign it if he wants it. But I just think he's similar to like Ladd/okposo/Lucic/Ericsson. He's better defensively than all but maybe Ladd. But offensively his offensive game was similar to there's before MacKinnon went god mode. I suspect by himself he's a 20-25/50-55 guy. That's a 6 million ish player. AAND wingers like him age terribly.

But as I said he's your captain, playing great, and a key piece of the team. You kinda have to sign it

    Anyway don't sign Hjalmarsson.

You probably do lose graves to Seattle . I'd ditch comphers over doonskoi if you have to.

rofl if makar asks for 10m, avs would be smart to trade him if they want a team to actually be able to compete

If Brossoit is re-signed and Comrie isn't then Miska would be 4th on the depth chart (Hellebuyck-Brossoit-Berdin-Miska). 🤷🏻‍♂️

Korpi is very solid goaltender. Most of his problems arose as the forward depth and especially center depth detiorated over the last couple years. Elvis probably has a bit more raw talent, but Elvis also has a bit of hot head streak, and he let’s his emotions take over a bit too much at times, which tends to hurt him a bit. Elvis Reminds me a lot of Ron Hextall. So take that for what it’s worth.

Yes, the aim was to be realistic rather than ideal. Think COL's # for PG will be ~5, Binnington wining the cup and Markstrom having played behind VAN's defense may make them less comparable, and aftermath of PG's playoff performance may nix some of the Vezina nom bounce from COL's perspective. Agreed w/ the aspiration w/r/t Compher & Saad, but think that Saad's price will be 5x4 ... if Makar bridges (7x3?) and Landeskog takes a discount (7x7?) then that gives COL ~8mill to sign a goalie and Saad, if 2 of Graves, Donskoi, and Compher are traded/go to SEA ... think trading all three w/o taking back cap might be difficult to get value, and that Graves is probably the player that has significant market value ... Anyway, only half baked thoughts - many thanks for your .02USD.

Much appreciate your CLB goalie thoughts. IYO, what might be CLB's prices for Merzlikins & Korpisalo each? I sense that CLB wanted a 1st or a blue-chip prospect (like Timmins) for EM but had not been able to receive it either last year or at the deadline. Graves' market value is probably a 2nd & 3rd according to hearsay so that is certainly a gap.

I dont think Makar is incentivized to sign long term in a flat cap scenario. A 3yr bridge makes more sense.

I think that’s the case for all the young dmen up. What will be most interesting is who signs first and sets the market. But yeah they can all especially Makar make significantly more especially if the bridge spans the flat cap.

Market value is probably closer to 8 million. Karlsson signed a 6.5x7 contract after he won the Norris, even if Makar doesn't win the Norris, he has shown he is Norris caliber. That was a C.H.% of 10.11% at the time for the current salary cap that would be 8,239,650 AAV.

Unfortunately goalies do not return nearly what skaters do. Since the Jackets favor Elvis, and CBJ probably would not trade him unless they get an offer that blows them away. Probably a 1st and maybe even a prospect. I recon they would probably take a 2nd for Korpi.
