In search of a center

Description
Contract projections are rounded from Evolving-Hockey. Once traded, Eichel is on LTIR for the regular season for neck surgery and rehab until playoffs. Aim of roster is to squeak into playoffs w/o JE, and then pull a Kucherov/Kane. *Think* that w/Rask waived and waiting to sign Cole & Stepan, JE could be on a 20 person roster at the start of season and so MIN could wait to place him on LTIR and therefore still accrue cap space during the season in order for deadline moves and/or bringing up JE a bit earlier if rehab goes well? But am no Brandon Pridham! MIN probably too p.o'ed at Mennell to sign him, but think they should. Think as much as Parise may want to be bought out/traded, MIN will stick it out for at least another year ...

Purpose of roster is to put together a realistic JE->MIN trade that gives MIN a chance to be a contender in 22-23 when JE isn't hurt & Rossi, Boldy have matured, and center depth could be JE, JEEK, Rossi. Think from BUF's perspective, MIN is a good landing spot (western conference) and if rumors are correct, LA wants to spend their cap on defense rather than JE ...

Additional Details:
Eichel return is centered around Fiala rather than Boldy or Rossi under the assumption that that would be BUF's preference, but from MIN, it could be any of the 3, tho if not Fiala, than Dumba would be substituted for Grennway to balance cap. KF's contract guesstimate is 6x6, which MIN would probably not want to give him, but which makes sense from BUF's perspective as a Reinhardt replacement. General framework is 2 1sts along with a elite RFA who will be paid + good roster player or blue chip prospect + good roster player w/a significant contract. BUF's gamble on the 2022 first would be that w/JE potentially out for much of the next season and MIN back in the Central meat grinder, the 2022 1st could be quite high.

Additional Details:
Expansion draft - MIN sends their 4th best prospect along with Soucy in order to protect both roster goalies and to simplify matters for this AGM of whether the Eichel trade happens before or after expansion which would determine whether MIN goes 441 or 731 ;)

I think it's close. Sabres may want a Boldy/Addison/Rossi though. If Eichel starts on LTIR it may work with the cap but it would probably be best to buy out Parise or find a taker for Rask.

Since Buffalo is expected to draft Owen Power instead of Matt Beniers it becomes really important that a top center prospect come back in a Jack Eichel trade. Even if it means Rossi or Boldy instead of the 2022 first rounder, I don’t see Adams going for the deal without that.

Sabres fan here.

The Sabres will have cap-space and a need for centres who can play in 2021-22. What if they replaced the 2022 1st with Rossi and added Rask to the deal.

Fiala, Greenway, Rask, Rossi, 1st in 2021 for Eichel.

This is on the assumption that Rask holds negative value in a trade otherwise.

If you want to get crazy and one-stop shop, add Reinhart and Dumba to the deal.

To the Wild: Eichel, Reinhart

To the Sabres: Fiala, Greenway, Rask, Rossi, Dumba, 1st in 2021.

Guerin won’t give up 2 of the 3 in Rossi Boldy and Fiala. It’s likely Fiala if it’s any of those because of cap. But I personally dont think MIN is going to go for Eichel. I can guarantee 2 of the 3 don’t move though.

Think MIN *should* jump at either though it is a big swing, less sure BUF is interested in Rossi when they passed on him last draft (tho think they should be). Think from MIN's perspective a balanced combination of BUF's choosing from among Fiala, Greenway, Rask, one of Rossi or Boldy, Dumba, 2021 1st, 2022 1st that includes 6+mill of cap would work for JE (and more cap/less picks-prospects w/Reinhardt). Think from BUF's perspective even if they would prefer a not Rossi blue chip center prospect, this might be the best set of options in western conference if LA isn't in and ANA is unwilling to shift Zegras.

Wonder if MIN's hesitancy over the JE risk/reward conundrum might be altered if it effects for how long Kaprizov is willing to sign, as hearsay indicates MIN's plan at center may have a significant impact ...

I think it definitely impacts Kaps willingness to go for more term. Russos latest mailbag pretty much all but confirmed that. And obvi Russo doesn’t have any control what actually happens, but he’s generally a pretty reliable conduit to what’s being discussed by front office. I mean, I don’t think anyone can blame Kap. He doesn’t owe MIN anything or have ties here. He just dominated his rookie year with Vic Rask at center. I think anyone would be saying “get me some real help or I’m gone” in his shoes.

Not likely Jack will be on LTIR ti start next season. The surgery he wants is a 6 wk recovery. The surgery the Sabres would approve is 8-10 weeks. If Jack gets traded before the season starts it will be soon and whatever team acquires him will be in agreement with the treatment plan. He will be ready for training camp

Prior to the world championships my impression was there was no NHL ready talent even at the top of this draft. There’s a reasonable chance that neither player turns pro next season. And if it’s in their best interest to go back to school for one more year the Sabres should allow them to do it. There is practically no way either guy is going to go back to school for 3 more years just screw the Sabres and sign with someone else in free agency. Sabres fans can’t expect to turn another 18-year-old kid into the franchise savior. They’ve already done it with two different 18-year-olds and look where that got us.
