Not sure I understand...how is this team going to tank? They have two top 5 scorers and two more high level forwards plus a solid D core. At worst they would miss the playoffs by a little bit and end up with a middle pick, and have wasted a year of Marner, Nylander, and Matthews' contracts and Tavares' age

Are you dumb what kind of trade is that for Campbell the guy was litterally the best player in the Montreal series for the leafs ur stupid if you think the leafs are trading campbell.

Within the last decade or so, teams with that level of talent have tanked before.

It happens more frequently than you think.

              Examples:

Oilers with McDavid/Draisaitl for 3 seasons
Hawks with Kane/Toews/Keith/Seabrook for 2 seasons
              Capitals with Ovechkin/Backstrom/Carlson in 2013/2014

Campbell would get traded at next year's deadline if the Leafs tank and Campbell doesn't want to sign an extension.

Trade is based on when Robin Lehner was traded from Chicago to Vegas with Toronto as the middle man.

If the Leafs tank, Campbell being the best player during the playoffs against Montreal would be completely irrelevant next year.

If this team is going to tank, at the very least one of the core 4 would be traded, likely 2 or 3 (heck even all 4).

This is a horrible idea, you are burn very valuable years off of Matthews and Marner's contracts. The worst part is this team might still make the playoffs and won't be in high contention for a top pick.

Regardless of what happens to the Leafs over the course of the next 3 years, Matthews, Marner and Nylander will still be with the Leafs until they become pending UFAs.

Also, Tavares has a NMC and is from Toronto, so he's not going anywhere.

As long as tickets are sold out, Matthews/Marner/Nylander jerseys are flying off the shelves and Rogers/Bell are turning a profit, the core isn't going anywhere.

              No first from Vancouver.

A first will come from a trade with another team then.

Vancouver is just an illustrative example.

Oh, I agree they aren't going anywhere.

Which means they aren't rebuilding. Rebuilding means you trade your best players for futures. And retooling (aka a small rebuild where you keep the core intact, in other words what you have here) makes no sense for the leafs based on the age of their core players.

I am sure another team will give you a first. He is just not on Vancouver's immediate needs.
