Just fantasizing about what we could do with a couple of buyouts if the league agreed to the same thing they did in 2012-13.

  1. Carlson, John
  2. Hagelin, Carl
Additional Details:
Carlson is not worth 8M. Maybe 5.5M, but definitely not 8.

Hagelin would be fine at a 1.25m cap hit. Not almost 3m on the fourth line.

Instead of a compliance buyout what would you consider as fair value for Carlson at his current cap hit then? I was thinking something like Norlinder or Guhle + Drouin (good young top 6 winger to help offset cap hit) + 1st or 2nd but I am also not sure of Washington's needs. We will not give up any of KK, CC, NS, or AR they are our future core.

The only issue with Guhle and Norlinder is they’re both lefties. That’s one of the positions in our organization where we’re quite deep. Drouin would be a nice add, but I don’t know exactly what his value is right now and when he’s coming back from his indefinite leave. If the caps were shopping Carlson, I’d imagine they’d have some takers even with his cap hit just for his offensive capabilities and numbers he’s put up in the past few seasons.

I’d ask for a late first or early second round pick, a RHD prospect that projects to end up in the top 4, and a roster player (either a middle 6 winger or bottom 4 RHD) to offset cap hit.

Yeah that was sort of where I was thinking his value was too. So just a comment on Guhle, he is indeed a LHD but he prefers to play the RD position much like Brodie. I wouldn't be opposed to something like say Brook + Drouin + 2021 1st + 2021 2nd to offset the concern over taking Drouin.

I think other Habs fans may consider that an overpay that seems a little unnecessary considering you guys already have Weber and Petry on the right side. I would take that trade, but I’m not sure many Habs fans would take it, too.

Weber is getting ready for retirement in the next 2-3 years IMO and our issue is we are laking a top 4 PMD man but with Carlson we can lineup

    Petry-Weber
    Edmundson-Carlson
    Kulak Romanov

Petry already plays the left side sometimes with Weber on the PP and is comfortable there so it's not a huge adjustment for him.
