Jonathan Dahlén has signed a new contract with the San Jose Sharks.

Almost two points per game last year in the Allsvenskan, so I hope things go well for Dahlen.

Will he finally make an impact or do we find out that he’s truly a bust? This is likely his last shot, if he doesn’t make it he won’t be coming over again for several years as a depth signing by Toronto lol

There could still be a player there. His numbers were goofy in the Swedish 2nd tier league.

He'll be back in the Allsvenskan by 2022

Can't really be a bust if you're a 2nd round pick. You're mostly just looking for players that could possibly be NHL talent at this point

If your 2nd round pick isn't a full time NHL player, it's a bad pick. You aren't expecting a superstar, just a depth piece.

Vast majority of second round picks don't turn into full time NHL players. Heck, you're lucky if you get a guy in the last 5 picks of the first round who can be an everyday player.

You're right and those picks are busts, but for those late 1sts, there's also a Brayden Point in the draft.

Busts would be a top 10 pick who never pans out (See Yakupov and Griffin Reinhart as examples). A guy taken in the 2nd round is not a bust, it's a crap shoot. And yes, there are the Point's of the world, but they're the exception, not the rule.

Considering the value of a 2nd round pick, I'd argue that they aren't viewed as crapshoot picks. If you don't get atleast a fringe NHLer, you're losing compared to other teams. That's why I call it a bust.

Also worth noting Dahlen is only 23 so he's still too young to be "bust". But again, the majority of second rounders don't turn into everyday or even fringe NHL players. While a team is more confident in 2nd rounders turning into players than say 3rd or below, still doesn't change the fact those players being something is low unless it's an insanely great draft year (2003, 2015).

despite putting up great numbers -it wasnt in swedens top league, his ahl numbers were okay, but for a young player hes moved around a lot. dont think his head is on straight. unlikely to amount to anything at the nhl level- but san jose has plenty of opportunities for him.

Wrong. He rejoined Timra with the goal of winning a championship. Since Timra won with Dahlen as captain, the team was promoted to the elite league SHL. So he could go back to Timra but it will be in the SHL.

Dahlen still oozes with potential but he will have to earn his ice time competing with Kane and Meier for a top six role. It's likely he plays 3rd line to start the year with whomever the Sharks sign as a 3C as they said they are looking for an established middle six C (Danault, Wennberg etc) and with Matty Nieto on the right side this could be a potential top 3rd line in the west next year. I am excited.

He joined Timra because it was his youth team and they have been trying since the 90s to get promoted to the SHL. Dahlen could have easily put up strong numbers in SHL but wanted to make sure Timra got the promotion it needed and they did after winning the Allsvenskan championship last year.

you cant say he would put up strong numbers in a league hes never played in, the fact remains that in an almost full seasons worth of games in the AHL he got 15 goals.... that doesnt scream automatic 3rd line nhler by any stretch. As for Timra- good for them, but how long after losing their best player do they get demoted? Hes a longshot at best, going to a weak team like san jose improves his odds for the short term.

He wasn't into playing in the AHL. His head was never there. It was Sweden or NHL for him and Okay, that's lame but to call Dahlen a "long-shot-at-best" is really a cop out.
