Would Barkov Prefer Playing Under Gallant in New York

Created by: Shakabakes
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 14, 2021
Published: Jun. 14, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I may be reaching here, but it's an interesting discussion.

When Barkov was 1st breaking into the NHL, he spent those 1st couple years being groomed under Gallant.

Assuming that relationship went well, would he consider the idea of waiting for Free Agency to sign with the Rangers?

Well aware that the Panthers did well this year. Quenneville is as good as they come, and the lack of taxes in Florida is attractive to some players.

But if the option came along....to play in a Top Hockey market...with a familiar Coach...and a young team on the rise...would that be something to mull over?

Rangers won't have the cap space to give Barkov the 10+mil he would command on the open market

Don’t think people like big cities, big markets, big stages, historic arenas, maximum spotlight… hahaha

It wouldn’t surprise me if he did.. let’s get real.. money isn’t everything. Players don’t always take max pay so it’s possible. It’s possible we let others go for the space. Can’t rule it out. Would be awesome if we can lock guys up for bargain deals moving forward and figure out how to manipulate the LTIR for playoffs.

Not all players like bigger markets. Barkov is said to be on the shy side and might not like the spotlight that comes from playing in MSG

If they let Zibenejad walk, that frees up money.

after Stamkos visited Toronto during that period you can talk but can't sign when Toronto Brought in the mayor and CEO of Canadian Tire telling him much endorsement money he could make.
he said after he got back in Tampa he walked into Yzermans office and said get me the most you can I'll sign it. his contract is pretty buyout proof too cause only a mil is base salary the rest are guaranteed bonus not subject to the buy-out clause. Barkov might have that. South Florida Miami is pretty big too.

It's big in population. But most of that population doesn't even know they have a Hockey team.

While they never won their Cup under Yzerman, he did an excellent job building up that Franchise. Considering his skill as a GM, coupled with the incompetence of Toronto at that time (maybe still), it made more sense for Stamkos to stay put.

plus He has never done a comercial except the one he does for his annual charity event for Ronald McDonald house and the obligatory you're watching the lightning on blah blah commercial. maybe Barkov likes the fact he can just live his life and not have people annoying him everywhere he goes again he's rumored to be a kind of shy person.

BTW Julien Briesbois had a lot to do with it too. he was Yzermanns Assistant Gm

Exactly this, the main reason why I see 0 possible scenarios where he doesn't stay in SoFla

Maybe, but things get real tight when fox needs his deal.

The difference between Barkov and Zibenejad isn't astronomical. Regardless of which of them we signed (while extending Fox long term), we were going to run into a Cap issue anyway.

If you're facing a Cap dilemma regardless of who you have, I would rather have the best possible player for it (Barkov).

That's just not smart team building at all. Ask Toronto if paying Panarin, Barkov, and maybe eventaully fox 10+ mil is going to work for playoff success. and even if you let him walk you have to pay kakko and Laf eventually
