Offseason

Description
I think / hope Dillon gets taken in the expansion draft. Need to get some LHDs out. Threw in a 3rd to entice Seattle.

My biggest concern is not Vanecek, but Sprong. I think Seattle will have better options at goalie. Sprong has a break-out year with 82 games.

In this option, I think this team would be solid. Keeping Kuzy instead of trading him away for minimal return. That third line is dangerous. Defense has youth and depth. Only position that lacks depth is center, but maybe McMichael gets called up (depending on cap room).

Not sure if Hoffman's contract is in the right ball park. Up and down year (healthy scratch with some hot streaks).

Biggest player-related factors for the Caps this upcoming season:
1) Kuzy returns to above average (at least)
2) Mantha has 50/60+ points (25+ goals; 30+ assists)
3) Bottom-six scoring (especially Sheary / Sprong - need both to continue success)

Evolving-Hockey's contract projection tool (they've been pretty spot on historically) has Hoffman's most likely contract being 5 years with a $5.65M cap hit, but if he were to take a one year deal, they say it'll be $3.177M cap hit, so you're pretty close there.

I'd be interested in seeing Sprong in the top six. Oshie and Eller work really well together, and he could probably use some ice time reduction at 5 on 5. Something tells me that the Caps probably aren't going to go after anything big in free agency, except for maybe a second or third pairing LHD if Seattle takes Dillon. Kempny is a huge question mark coming back from an Achilles injury, a bad injury for a defenseman who relies on his skating a lot.

If the Caps end up moving on from Hagelin, I feel like Axel Jonsson-Fjallby may be his replacement. They have similar skill sets (with AJF's offense probably being a bit better). Figure a potential lineup for the Caps next season looks like:

    Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Wilson
    Mantha - Backstrom - Sprong
    Sheary - Eller - Oshie
    AJF - Dowd - Hathaway

    Orlov - Carlson
    Fehervary - Schultz
    UFA D - TvR

Is Hagelin the PK'er he used to be?

He really is. He's excellent in everything but finishing. He had a number of breakaways but I don't think he buried one of them.

I would entice them to take Schultz as we have TVR to then pair with Dillon which worked out well. Fehrevary will be in the top 6 next year, Bmac pretty much guaranteed it so he will replace Chara. I agree about not wanting to lose Sprong, Vanacek too if we can avoid it.

I completely agree - realistically, I don't see the Caps making a big splash in free agency. If they do go with your lines above (Hags and DIllon gone), for once, the caps should have around $3 mil available in cap salary. Would be nice to not be pressed for funds (depending on the UFA D they sign).

Agreed - I think it will (hopefully) be Schultz or Dillon. Only say Dillon due to a) having a lot of LHD depth and b) RHDs (especially ones who can lead a powerplay point if needed) are tough to find.
